Question about Brother MFC-440CN InkJet Printer

1 Answer

How do I remove the print heads and clean them? Where can I can additional print heads and how would I replace them? The service center near me over the phone said that to replace the printer heads would cost about $150. It was recommended I spend that money and get a new one.

The print head should be part of the inkjet cartridge. Did you not use the printer for a while? In that case, the cartridges may have just dried out. The price he quoted you sounds a bit high, but not unheard of, for a set of new inkjet cartridges.

You should be able to get replacement inkjet cartridges from Staples, Office Depot, etc.

It really is a coin toss...most people would go for a new printer...and i would recommend, get a laser printer...the cost per page is far, far less.

Hope this helps.

The black ink does not work even with a new one.

Dear friend., This is tricky model printer.. U re just replaced the ink tank, not print head. Seems Print head was clogged..
For example 1. suppose you filled ink in fountain pen, if nib is faulty pen wont write.. 2. If you are using ball point pen, replacing the refill again it will work. We can say your printer as same as fountain pen. Only way is go to the nearest service center ask them to clean the print head nozzles, there is no other alter because, to reach print head lot of mechanical parts has to be removed which i can't suggest you to do so & there is no replaceable print head in side., sorry no help from my side..

"The ink absorber is almost full. Press printer's Start button to continue printing. Contact the service center." What does this mean?

This means that the counter related to the amount of ink these pads absorb during print head cleaning cycles and from edge to edge printing is nearly at the programmed limit. You can still print by pressing the Start button.

However, you can expect the printer to stop working soon. You can clean out the waste ink pads yourself. This is a bit messy so have plenty of newspaper around. Disassemble the printer from the top. The pads (rubber of some type) are below the cartridge carrier on the side. Pull them out and blot most of the ink off them. Then run under water until the water comes out clear. Allow to dry (you can speed up the drying process with a hair dryer).

Finally reset the waste ink counter in the service mode:
With the printer off but connected to power, Press and hold Set/Reset and then press the Power button. When the power light is lit, continue to hold the Power button and press Set/Reset twice. The light should be green.

Now press Set/Reset 4 times (the light will switch between orange and green at each press). Turn off the printer. The counter should be reset.

Do not reset the counter without cleaning or replacing the pads. You will get ink spreading all over the printer. Additionally, the waste ink counter is set to a value that should be reached near the printer's end of life with normal usage. Other parts may fail soon.

I hope this helps.

When I power up the BJC-85, the printer cycles through the start up process and then beeps three times and places the carriage in the replace cartridge position. I have changed cartridges and ink tanks...

The 3 beep error is a prompt that no print head is installed. The error is occurring because the printer no longer recognizes that a print head is installed. Normally , this is due to a defective print head. If you have replaced the print head with ONE YOU ARE CERTAIN IS GOOD, then the problem is in the printer. Try taking a cue tip soaked in isoprophyl ( rubbing) alcohol and cleaning the contact strip where the print head installs. The part in the printer. The area will feel flexible but you can clean it safely. Let the alcohol dry and try the print head again. If you still have the error, the only solution is a full service that involves replacing a major part of the print mechanism.

We're getting this Service Required message - Parts inside your printer are near the end of their service life. See your printer documentation. What part are we needing to replace?

the parts most likely to be replaced with such a message are the waste ink pads. (sponge pads that collect the ink that is used for print head cleanings). these pads are difficult to reach inside the printer (full dissassembly is necessary) and doing so is a VERY dirty job. i suggest contacting a repair center near you.

COLOR IS NOT PRINTING VERY GOOD

There are many reasons for this problem.but some very common possibilities are as follows:--- 1) The color cartridge in the printer is near to empty.in this case replace the cartridge and check out. 2) The other reason is that color cartridge is not empty but the color in it is got dried up .In this case also the cartridge needs to be replaced. 3) Many times this problem occurs after the cartridge is refilled.or you are using re-cycled cartridges instead of original cartridges. BUT if you are using original Epson cartridge, the cartridge is not empty and the ink is is not dried up.Still you have this problem then, its the problem of the print head of the cartridge. In the printer where you insert the cartridge below that there is a print-head.In the print-head there are many tiny holes. From this holes the ink passes for printing on paper. But if this holes are blocked then ink will not pass even from the new cartridge. In this case the print head needs cleaning. From the PC in printer properties there is a option called"CLEAN THE PRINT CARTRIDGES" but this is automatic cleaning. But if the ink is jammed very hard then this automatic cleaning will not help. The print head will require manual cleaning. And for that the printer needs to be opened and print head needs to be removed. If the printer is under warranty then its advisable to get the print head cleaned by Epson service center but if its out of warranty then you get it done by local printer repair tech. But if the ink is stuck up very hard then the print head needs to be replaced. Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

My epson stylus photo printer is printing a black vertical line in all my prints. I have done the head cleaning and print head alignment several times. Is there anything else I can do?

black vertical lines on the printout comes due to some reasons.
1) if the black cartridge is near to its end it will give black lines instead of proper printing.
the cartridges gets over many times due to head cleaning and deep cleaning.in 3-4 cleanings cartridge gets over.in one cleaning 4 ml of ink gets puled out of cartridge.the whole quantity of cartridge is near to 25 ml.
but if the cartridge is full then the problem is of cartridge head .the head is the part in which you insert the cartridges if the head is got blocked internally to its holes from where ink comes out.then there are two methods to clean the head one is head cleaning which you did.the other is removing the head by disassembling the printer and then cleaning the head manually with isoprophyll liquid.but its a time consuming and tough job.a local printer repair center will be advisable,
and in some cases it has seen that cartridge gets air pressure problem inside and due to that it leaks inside the printer so replacing that cartridge solves the problem.also many times the cartridge gets leaked and that leaked ink gets collected and stuck up on the roller of the printer from where paper passes so the strips of ink gets printed on the paper.in this case no head cleaning but cleaning the internal roller of the printer with tissue paper helps.the procedure is called servicing.that can also be done at local printer repair center.or you can do it manually by using tissue paper.but to service whole printer it needs to be disassemble.
check out his option.thanks.

Canon multipass mp 390 wont print black

FYI: This was Canon's reply to me (for my MPS 390) and it worked !
Dear Doug:
Thank you for contacting Canon product support. We value you as a Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you. We regret that black ink does not print from your MP390.
The issue may be with the print head. The print head holds the ink tanks.
You can print a Nozzle Check Pattern to confirm whether the inks are being correctly ejected from the print head nozzles and whether the print head is correctly aligned. Please follow these steps to do so:
1. On the MultiPASS control panel, press [Additional Functions].
2. Press '<' (left) or '>' (right) arrow to select [MAINTENANCE].
3. Press Set. [NOZZLE CHECK] will appear.
4. Press Set again and a Nozzle Check Pattern will print. If lines are broken or white lines are present, clean the print head nozzles.
Verify if the black grid pattern prints at the top. If not, then the nozzles may be clogged.
Please follow these steps to perform a Print Head Refreshing for the
MP390:
1. On the MultiPASS control panel, press Additional Functions. '1. FAX SETTINGS' will appear on the bottom row of the display.
2. Press '<' (left arrow) or '>' (right arrow) to select '3.
MAINTENANCE.'
3. Press Set. 'Nozzle Check' will appear.
4. Press '>' the right arrow to select '3. HEAD REFRESHING' and then press Set. The print head cleaning takes approximately 1 to 2 minutes to complete.
5. Perform a Nozzle Check Pattern.

4. Press '>' the right arrow to select '2. CLEANING' and then press Set. The print head cleaning takes approximately 30 seconds to complete.
5. Print a Nozzle Check Pattern to see if the print quality is improved.
6. Perform Head Refreshing if lines are still broken or white lines still appear. If nozzle check pattern is missing colors, replace the ink tank.
Once you have completed two deep cleanings, please perform another Nozzle Test. If colors are still missing, turn off the printer.
After 24 hours, turn the printer on and perform one more Deep Print Head Cleaning. Once the cleaning is complete, print another Nozzle Test.
After you have completed the Nozzle Test, please let us know the results.
This may be caused by the ink jets in the cartridge print head (the device that holds the ink tanks) wearing out or the ink nozzles starting to clog up. Remove and reseat the print head. Verify that ink has not built up on the bottom of the print head. Please follow the instructions below to reseat the print head:
1. Power the unit on.
2. Open the cover of the printer to bring the print head holder to the center.
3. Remove the ink tanks and set them on a protective covering, such as a rag.
4. Raise the locking lever to release the print head.
5. Remove the print head and reinstall it.
6. Lock the lever back down, gently.
7. Replace the ink tanks. Make sure they securely snap into place in the proper slots.
8. Lower the cover of the unit.
If you have performed multiple print head cleanings but the issue continues, it is most likely that the cartridge print head (the device that holds the ink tanks) will need to be replaced.
