Check all your cables are attached correct and well.
The drive should hum/buzz/vibrate gently if no sound there maybe no power getting to it. If there is sound/vibrating coming from to drive check the USB is connected correctly...
If it is, disconnect the drive by the USB and update your drives and make sure you have the most up to date MS service pack.
Restart your computer to ensure all updates are installed.
Reconnect the USB lead from the drive (make sure the drive's power is on)
windows Should now automatically install the driver. (This may take a minute to start)

If worst come to pass and nothing works you can try rehousing the drive or connecting it directly to computer.

It wont work

Did it come with a drivers disc? Some specialty MP3 players do. You'll need to install these drivers for windows to recognize as windows will generally only recognize MP3 players whose hard drives are set up like flash drives, but if it has it's own operating system, like higher-end MP3 player such as Creative ones and iPods, they need drivers.

If it doesn't have a disc, try the link below, see if there's drivers/troubleshooting guides or applications for your product.

Sata drive is not recognized by os during new install

When installing XP or Vista you get the option to load third party drivers for unknown devices. I think it's F6 just after the start of any version of Windows, once you press this you will have to supply the drivers for the Windows installation. This will make Windows recognise the hdd from then on.

SeagateFree Agent Go 120 G.B external portable hard drive When I connect that in to my lap top (HP Pavilion) windows can recognize the hard drive and once I connect that same one in to my desktop windows...

you will need to install the drivers for your drive.
xp doesn;t recognize 2.0 usb unless you install drivers and have a usb 2.0 port
but install the drivers and you should get it to recognize

you can go to control panel, system and device manager.
look for a usb device that is not working and right click install drivers or update drivers.
See if it comes up.
Once it does you will see it in the device manager under disk drives

Windows wont recognize my usb drive.

While USB drives are 'hot-pluggable' Windows doesn't always do what is advertised (i.e. Plug and PRAY). Try leaving the drive plugged in and rebooting the PC, it may find it that way and install a fresh driver for it.

Dell 2400 wont recognize harddrive

I don't know how old the Dell is but I have not seen a BIOS setup routine that did not automatically find and recognize a new hard drive for many years. Perhaps the BIOS is the source of the problem.  Did you try the removed drive in another system? Did you check the CMOS backup battery? If this needs to be replaced, it may not recognize much of anything.

Drive NOT being recognized by WinXP

Put your ear to the drive and verify if it is making any strange low level sounds. Check to make sure the usb connection wasnt affected. YOu wont need a driver as it appears to be hardware related. Either the enclosure or drive may be failing.
