Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

I just called GE answer hotline and they just re-directed me to call a GE repair service tech. I told her about the magnetron and she said this has nothing to do with this issue. (Hmmm dont believe that...) My problem: Microwave turns off after 2 secs and have to reset clock all over again...Should I just buy a new microwave or investigate this further??

This is almost always due to a defective or loose magnetron causing electrical interference and disruption in the control circuit board.

Details covering some previous models are in their bulletin here. Even if your model is not on the list, the same problem can occur.

If your magnetron was recently replaced, it may have loose mounting nuts or bolts or maybe the wire mesh RF gasket was not installed or got pinched.

One way to test it is to do the following:

1. Unplug the microwave or turn off its breaker.
2. Open the door, then detach the control panel as shown in the video at http://www.microwavedisplay.com and swing it down, but without disconnecting the wires. If you have any trouble getting the grille off once the screws are removed, slide the hood vent grille to the left about 1/4", then then pull it forward. On some models there are L-shaped clips that fit into a slot to hold bottom of the vent.
3. Plug the microwave back in.
4. Make sure neither you nor anyone else reaches in behind the control panel. There will exposed high-voltage connections.
5. Put a few cups worth of water in a microwave-safe container and place it inside the microwave.

6. Shut the door.
7. Run the microwave for about 1 minute or so on full power. (Time Cook > 1 > 0 > 0 > Start, e.g.)
8. If it does not fail, try it several more times.
9. When the water boils, change the water and try again.


NOTE:
If your model does not have a door handle, you will need to unplug the oven and reattach the control panel to be able to open the door.


If it still does not fail, I would recommend that you put it all back together and keep using it until it fails more consistently, then repeat this test.

While a microwave should never be left running unattended under any circumstances (as your owner's manual will tell you) it's even more important when one is exhibiting a failure or any odd behavior. So play it safe and stay with it while it's running!

If you or someone you know want to replace the magnetron yourself, you will need to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

Working on a GE model JVM1860WF001, light comes on motor runs but don't heat, need help trouble shooting, or what is wrong?


i've been a g.e. service provider for years and if everything is working except the heat most likely it is going to be a magnetron on unit and will require disassembly of the cabinet to gain access...
the magnetrons on most of these units have a five year warranty so it may be worth calling a service tech out to evaluate.... could save you some money...if it is older than five years than the cost of repairs may exceed the value of the microwave at present time....

Generally a servicer will charge about $75 to visit the home, about $75-90 more to do the work, and about $75-90 for the part.

You can save the service call charge by removing it from the wall and taking it into the shop yourself.

My microwave turns on but the food isn't getting hot.


Sounds like a magnetron failure. This is the device that generates the microwaves that heat the food. It is connected to a lot of high voltage components and if you don't know what you are doing can really hurt yourself. Typically these parts short out and it needs to be replaced. The cost of replacing the magnetron come close to the cost of a new oven. Not usually cost effective to repair.

GE XL 1800 microwave light and fan operate but no heat


With the symptoms you have, I would most strongly suspect a shorted high voltage rectifier diode or a bad magnetron, or a loose and possibly corroded connection on the magnetron's terminal.

The diode is a fairly cheap fix, and your magnetron is still under the part warranty, but you would have to pay labor.

Microwaves usually have several years' warranty on the magnetron itself - such as 5 to 9 years!

I would call the GE Answer Center with your model and serial number and ask them how many years the magnetron is covered under warranty.

Also ask them for the numbers of a few local GE-authorized warranty service centers.

(GE Answer Center® 1-800-626-2005 Open Monday 6 a.m. ET through Saturday midnight ET)

If the mag is still covered, and you take it to a GE-authorized warranty service center, you'd not have to pay for the magnetron.

And taking it to the shop will indeed save you a lot of money.

GE microwave replacement magnetron


I also have a HotPoint (GE) Spacesaver Microwave Oven (MWO)that we got at Home Depot about 3 yrs ago. The magnetron quit yesterday and I found out online that this is a common occurance with GE MWO's. I found this string and thought I would attempt to have GE send me a magnetron to replace the defective original part.

I called Customer Relations (1 800-386-1215) and spoke with Nikita. I informed her nicely that I was aware that this is a common problem with GE MWO's and that I am a Union Electrician who would like to perform this repair myself. I simply needed the replacement part. She was very understanding and asked for the model and serial number and after a few minutes she supplied me with an order confirm #.

The part should arrive in a few days via FedEx and we will be back into space age cooking and also our appliances will still match. Thanks to all who posted to this string and clued me in (You have saved me a C note!).

GE JVM1870 Runs, but won't heat up


Our GE jvm1870 is now over 4 yrs old, and had been working fine-- until recently when using, didn't heat anymore & also started making a crazy sound.

Am no electrician, so I called GE to help. Needed a new magnetron & some diode. Part was under a 10 yr warranty- the total cost for service call + labor was under $200. Not great, but beats buying a new microwave ($400-700) and having to install it.
