Question about Gateway FPD 1830 18.1" Flat Panel LCD Monitor
I too have the exact same problem. Just started about 3 weeks ago. My Gateway system is about 3 or 4 years old, using Windows XP media edition. I too tried different power settings, I also tried different refresh rate settings. The only way I can get the monitor on is, like you, cycle the monitor power button and while its flickering it seems I can keep it from going black for a few seconds more, if I am wiggling the mouse and tapping the spacebar. Then before it goes black I have to click on an icon. If it has an action to complete, or program to start, that seems to give it enough oomph to stay on.
It sounds like you have a monitor with a common problem. After a few years some LCD monitors will blow a power supply. The problem is caused by parts called capacitors overheating in the confined space of the monitor. If you are good at electronics repair/soldering you can usually fix the problem. Check out a few pictures on my web site www.ccl-la.com/badcaps.htm You can take the back cover off your monitor and look for the bad parts, replace any that look like the pictures and your monitor should work fine. The capacitors do need to be installed with the correct + and - connections, note the stripe on the old one and insert the new one the same way. Look in our monitor repair section for step by step repair guide for this model. If you don't want to try the repair yourself we offer a repair service for $35 plus shipping.
I hope this helps, if so please rate my solution.

After usual overheating the capacitors, the weakest spot in FPD1830 are four chip resistors located in the inverter board a bit above the middle, you can recognize them as they are bigger than others and located all four in one row. Holding by tweezers simply re-solder them to get rid of micro-cracks in the tin between pads and resistor contacts.
