First, check the belts to see if they are glazed and slipping. If the belts all look they are in good condition, than check your differential and transmission oil. Make sure it is not black or have burnt smell to them. They rear ends do have tendency to lock up if oil is not changed regularily

It is very possiblly the clutch. I You may have an adjuster on the clutch cable. If you do, turn it clockwise and tighten it. If not, I would get a closer look at the clutch.

Hi there,

for clarification: When the Engine Dies, Can you Restart the Engine or do you have to Wait for a Couple of Hours before?

The Smoke could be The Crankcase Vent Sticking and Allowing Pressure to Build up Inside the Crankcase Forcing the Oil to be Pushed into the Exhaust Port or by the Rings into the Compression Chamber. A Blown Head Gasket causes the Same Problem. I answered a Similar Question a few Weeks Ago and it was the Head Gasket Blown Between the Cylinder and the Valves. The Engine Power Loss is an Indicator of the Vent and the Head Gasket. Im Thinking Head Gasket.

Hope this Helps. Let me know.

My Craftsman riding lawn mower LT2000 (2002/2003) stopped moving. The drive belt seems to be loose. The engine starts and cutting blade engages fine. Was working fine but stopped working when it started...

there should be a drive belt tensioner somewhere on the belt, it usually works off the clutch/brake, when you push on the brake it apply's the brake and also takes the tension off the belt to stop it from moving.
Not sure of your ride on mower but that is how my ride on mower works so I hope this helps.

Depending on the usage of mower it is possible that belt is worn and likely it is stretched just enough to permit slippage. Usually belts will squeal and even have a burning smell. While the engine is often check to see the mechanical actions on the belt and feel for slackness.

I have a 46", 21 HP Craftsman riding mower. The

perhaps it is no oil or too much oil. Check oil level!
If it was too much it would be blowing oil or blue smoke out the exhaust.

Good luck! Hope this helps.

I have a bolens 38 inch riding mower. it cranked and when i tried to engage the cutting deck the belt smoked off. i replaced the belt and cranked mower. tried to engage and belt smoked and i shut it off....

did you try depressing the clutch to disengage everything regardless of being in neutral? and it sounds like a pulley bearing went bad.try to spin the pulley with your hand and see if it moves.take the belt off to the mower deck and that should keep them from turning when you go to start it.

Craftsman riding mower won't move.

yes it is a bad belt unless it is a hydro-stat(no clutch) you need to look under the mower and see if the belt is on correctly

Lots of smoke when I engaged stuck blades - now runs roughly

Most likely what you did was burn one or more spots on the belt. When the blades and belt stop turning, like in tall grass, the engine doesn't stop and will burn flat spots on the belt at the engine pulley. Every time the flat spot hits a pulley, it will jump and can set up a bad vibration. Run your hand around the sides of the belt or take it off and you will feel or see the thin spot(s) on it. Replace belt.
