Problem for Apple iPhone Smartphone

Is outlook 2003 compatible with the iphone 3g?

I use outlook 2003 and am trying to get email working on an iPhone 3g I just purchased. I have added accounts and appear to have things set up but I have received an error that the server does not support authentication. When I check for email on the iphone it diplays "connecting" for a moment but no email or error messages result.
