Question about Gateway GT5014 PC Desktop

1 Answer

Controllers done gone missing

I have the classic XP controller issues (i.e. I don't have any) and downloading the drivers from Gateway would be simple enough except that they extract to "C:\" My main drive is "I:\" (Don't ask me why as I inherited this puter). Changing the drive name is an invitation to calamity IMHO but I can't seem to find a work-around... Anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance, Charlie

Thanks for replying Mr. toast! That WOULD work (and I have done that) but the prob is INSIDE the zipped file. The file is auto-extracting itself to c: which isn't there in this case. So it immediately aborts.

I'm new to fixya. I'm not an IT guru but I do have SOME wits about these things. I see my query was vague so I'll try again:

This gt5014 was slicked three times by my Bro-in-law and tossed at me. COOL, i think, so I make an XP boot disk from my existing HP dog and voila! it worked! (ALMOST)

What I got was a stable OS that runs like a raped ape! In device manager, however, all "other devices" meaning the ethernet, multimedia, pci simple comms, sm bus and video controllers are yellow splats - code 28.
I do have IDT audio codecs which work fine and the video codecs seem flawless.
My prob surfaced when I installed LEXICON LAMBDA/CUBASE software to control the interface for recording music and bumping my bomb audio monitors (BX5A's can't recommend too highly).

The new audio drivers are recognized until reboot and they just sort of disappear. Oh, they are on the puter but not recognized until reloaded. Oh oh, I guess I have to deal with all those yellow question marks I'm thinking. So off to Gateway I go and all their downloadable driver updates are zipped into autoextracting files. They all want to extract to C: as mentioned above in my first post.
I know how to change directory ID's through admin tools/comp mgmnt but believe this is unwise.
My boot disk does NOT have the drivers on them because I ripped it out of an HP. Anybody have GT5014 drivers for rent? Cheap? Gee, how much space is fixya gonna gimme? Danke, Arigato, gracias, etc. Charlie

You should be able to choose the path the files extract before they are written. Just change the "C" to an "I" when the program asks you where to put the files.

In that case, the easist solution would be to use a flash drive and name it "C", extract the files, copy them to your main drive, and then remove the drive.

The other option would be to open your %temp% folder, delete whats in it and then restart the install. If you are lucky the files may extract to that location and you can grab them before the installer autodeletes them.

I had to re-install windows xp, and now there's no internet. I believe I might need to re-install the driver, because it doesn't seem to be recognizing the Zhone or the dsl connection. Is the driver...

yup you need to reinstall the drivers for your computer, most likely the drivers are removed after doing the re installation of windows, you can download the drivers for your windows on your OEM website original equipment manufacturer, check device manager in control panel,

go to control panel, click switch to classic view then click system in system click tab hardware click button device manager this is in XP

in vista win7 go to control panel in vista switch to classic view in win7 click drop down upper right of the icon select large or small icons, after switching to classic view select device manager on the list of icons if you see any question marks then you will need to reinstall all of those drivers missing ^_^

Network Controller Driver Missing Gateway M405

Well, you can directly try Driver Detective and let the software have a free scan to automatically detect & update the missing Gateway drivers. This way things can be much easier & efficient. Also you don't have to risk install wrong drivers which might cause severe system issues.

Best wishes!

I have a gateway note book MX6453

you must match the model of your laptop and download the right version (widnow OS) for you laptop.

in my experience, if you install window xp sp2 or higher version, you don't have to install the Mass Storage Controller driver, becasue window include.

in face, if you don;t install , it is not a big deal, or your window also install for you.

Help me to install WinXP in a Gateway Laptop that came with SATA HDD

you have probably already fixed this but maybe others can find this a little helpful. i had to downgrade a gateway ma7 for one of my customers who had lost their recovery cd with vista on it. Their HD had gone bad.

The reason the XP installer says "no HD" is because the the drivers required by the gateways Sata controller (hd controller) are not preloaded on the xp install disc. The only way around this is to download the windows xp compatible sata drivers from gateways website and then slipstream them into a custon windows xp install cd. its actually not as difficult as it sounds. just download the sata driver, a slipstreaming program called nlite.

1 download and install nlite
2 put in your xp install cd, and run nlite, when nlite asks, browse to the i386 folder (your installation files)
3 you will have lots of options to choose from, but for this purpose, choose "add drivers" and select the location of the gateway drivers (c:\cabs\something) i think.
4 finish and burn the cd. then use it to install windows xp.

this little guide isnt step by step, but with a little trial and error you should get by
