If you have a win98 cd, than start your pc, keep pressing F8 key until you get to safe mode. Than select "msdos" "command prompt" which ever it may be. Place your win98 cd in the drive and type
cd D:\setup and press enter. It should guide you the rest of the way.

Hi,

Basically yes. You need to remove the HD from the PC without any bootable devices and install it as a slave to a second PC preferably also Win98.
You can then proceed to format the HD (as FAT32) of the 1st PC on the 2nd PC. Sys that HD to transfer system files and make it active. To facilitate installation of the OS, create a folder on that HD and copy the Win98SE installer files into it. Remove that HD from the 2nd PC and reinstall on the 1st PC. Power and it will boot into Dos.  Go inside the folder where the OS installers are and run "setup".

Alternately, you can just clone the HD of the 2nd PC to the corrupt HD of the 1st PC after format  /s. Just make sure that you still have the Win98SE installers copied to the corrupt HD.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things went or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

I used active kill to format my hard disk and now when i want to install a windows it doesnot show. what should i do???

I ran into this same problem when I used a program call "diskkill". I did not know that I changed the format of the drive using this program to wipe a virus off it. So how to fix it go to http://www.bootdisk.com/ and download the win98 boot disk .iso or a image create a bootable cd rom disk to reformat the corrupted drive. Have the system boot to the cd rom drive. have it boot to no ram drive. When the drive letter to the cdrom pops up, type fdisk hit enter. You are given 4 choices. press 1 enter. 3 enter it will verify drive, reboot using win 98 cdrom again no ram drive. at cdrom drive letter type format c: /s hit enter. That should will format your drive to be a fat 32bit. Reboot put your Windows disk in and let the system reformat the drive to NTFS or leave it at 32 bit, the limitation to a DOS format are 32gb.

I have an old Sony Viao model PCG-962A loaded with Win Millenium OS. Its capacity is up to Win2000. Will it be possible for me to just re-format the HD and install Win98? Thank you.

Hi,

Yes certainly you can just reformat the hard drive and install Win 98 on the machine. You will no doubt find that the operating system runs very well as the computer was built for Win98 in the first place.

However you may find the you might have difficulty with the USB 2 drivers as they do not come with the driver cab package. You should be able to get the drivers from Sony's support website as well as any other drivers you may need.

Regards.

Computer boots up then shows windows 98 scrren

you may face either harddisk failure, a driver problem or virus infection:

tools: original win98-cd (or a bootable image

version of it), antivir-software on cd!

- please check whether it is possible to boot from win98-cd, with cd-rom support, not from harddisk.

(such option should be availabe after bios-load is over)

if not:

leave the setup process without fully installing
(press F3 button when asked for repair or install option)

in both cases :

type at the dos-prompt:

c:\win98/win

(command for changing to harddisk, windows-folder, booting windows from harddisk, but without loading all the drivers as usually)

win98 should come up in protected mode or give error messages.

- access cd-drive and execute vir-scan.
- delete and/or repair infected files
- turn down, attempt to reboot from hd
- if still impossible reboot from win98-cd,
run repair of installation and try once again
standard boot

problem solved? if not, take down error messages consult fixya again!

Reformatting acer 8730

To format the pc you have to use the Bootable OS cd ( 98 0r Xp )
If you are using 98 then you have to insert the 98 bootable cd into the CD drive set the boot sequence in the BIOS to boot from CD optionand restart the pc after restarting you have to identify the cd-drive letter which also appears at the command prompt here you have to browse the cd using dir/p command and then change to win98 directory using cd win98 here at the prompt(>) type format C: if C is the drive letter of the Harddisk
(2)If you want to format Using XP which is much easier than the previou procedure insert the XP cd and restart the system continue with the installation procedure of xp at one stage it will ask for to select the drive where you want install the xp select the drive and that particular drive will be automatically formated after format it will restart at that time you can remove the cd and exit the installation
If you want to completly delete all the harddisk partition and create new partitions you can do that using the Disk manager cd( PC can be formated and create new partition using Bootable XP also)
I am sorry if these procedures are to much

Formatting IBM Thinkpad 600E

I know you can't boot from the Windows 98 CD, and probably not from Windows 2000 either. It is possible to turn the the Windows 98 bootable floppy into a bootable CD, but I think you would be much better of trying to install Linux.

Why would you want to put Win98 on such a fast computer? I would try using a virtual PC to run Win98 if you really need it.

98 loading error message

When you format something you WILL lose all of the data that was there. I would also recomend upgradeing to XP, 2000, or NT. You may need to reinstall the OS. If you need instructions ask me and I can help.

I wan to use windows 98 along with XP

this is tricky as win98 is not supported and can not work on faster processors, The book says 2 gig but I had a problem on 1.8 ghz.

the next problem is win98 does not rceognize ntfs file systems. so a bootable partion manager (like linux GParted) would have to be run, to shrink the ntfs partition without altering content to allow another partition to be created then formatted into FAT32 so you could load 98 from a bootable cd.
