did you make sure that the cable going from the modem is plugged into the Internet port on the router?

If you are refering to the router, there is a small button you can use a pen to press and hold while the router is on, Hold for about 10 to 15 secs - You will see the lights change as its resetting. That will reset the router back to factory defaults. You can then follow the directions from your manual or goto Netgears website and look up the manual there which will be in PDF format.
Please give more details on what you are trying to do by setting an ip address. You maybe making things more complicated than need be.
G'luck

Is there an option to use a dynamically assigned IP address (also called DHCP)?
That's most likely the option you need, almost all home Internet providers use DHCP to assign the information you are asking for automatically to your Internet connected device (in this case, your router).
Let me know what options are available to you if neither Automatic or DHCP is.
Thanks!

Set your netgear router to DHCP or obtain an IP address automatically on the WAN, or public (internet) side
