Re: CMOS Error

The CMOS battery on this printer is a small Panasonic 2032 most typically from this manufacturer.

The error, specific to this printer, can happen for several reasons:

  • the coin cell battery that is located in the handle of the printer (remove the door and main battery pack and you'll see it on the side) has fallen below 3 volts.
  • The coin cell is above 3 volts, but placed in backwards.
  • the harness that connects the coin cell to the printer has become dislodged or damaged.
  • with or without a good coin cell (please replace if the cell is bad), the date is incorrect in the printer. There is a MM-DD-YYYY date that needs to be entered into the printer.
When the failure happens, you should be prompted with being able to enter a new date. Please enter your date as MM-DD-YYYY with the dashes, and with 4 digits for the year.

If your DOS software application running on the printer does not allow you to do this, please come back and I can give you a step by step solution to forcing the date into the printer.

Please note that with a good battery, 3V or higher, orientation correct (crown faces in), then you will likely have to either re-attach or replace the harness.

Though there are a couple of other issues that may cause this, these 4 cover 99% of all CMOS issues for this printer.

I say all of this because this issue can seem like one thing when it is something else. You can get a replacement battery from Radio Shack, and it just needs to be a good quality replacement for the one I listed.

Replacement is easy... remove the door at the bottom of the handle, remove the main battery pack. To the side, you'll see a coin cell, with a soft tipped tool or your fingers (not pliers or tweezers), remove the existing coin cell. Make sure you replace it in the exact same orientation.

The reason you do not want to use metal tipped tools is because you could short this battery out. You likely won't get hurt, but it will be annoying to have to keep replacing your coin cells because of this.
Also note that some users of this device do not use a coin cell because many IT folks find it unnecessary to worry about the real time clock and related functions.

Be well,

Re: CMOS Error

Usually you will find your CMOS battery somplace on the motherboard inside your PC. Before opening the PC though make sure you will not be voiding any warranties that you may have had when you bought it.
Some CMOS batteries have a small screw clasp that holds the battery in but most you can just pop out and then push the new one back in.
The most common battery type is a flat watch battery type size 2032, but it would pay to check before you go out and buy the replacement.
Hope this is helpful.

How to change the cmos battery in a magicolor 2200

Printers don't as a rule have a CMOS. Is this a printer question or is this a computer question?

If in deed a computer CMOS issue and you indeed have a dead CMOS, or BIOS battery, you will have to open the case, find the battery, remove it and replace with the same kind of battery. There will be a number on it. Find the replacement at Radio Shack.

My friend, I have computers in my lab with original Windows 98 on them that do not have dead BIOS batteries, which is not to say yours is not.

Who told you this was the problem?

Please study your problem and restate your question. Thank you.
