"Invisible" Pictures I just took a day's worth of pictures, and while I can view all of them on the camera in viewer mode, about 18 are simply missing when I hook the memory card up to the computer. It's mostly the last few. I tried taking new pictures and even a video clip to see if something had stopped recording, and those don't show up on the computer either. Any ideas how I can get those last few to register on the computer? Otherwise it looks like I won't be able to save copies of my pictures any more! Thanks!

I am using a card reader; it's just not reading all of the pictures. Any particular recovery software that you'd recommend? I'm on a Mac if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the help! I haven't tried the software yet -- I had it set up then thought to check whether the other computer in the house could read the card first (this computer is new and doesn't need the card reader). Turns out it can. Does that mean the card reader is broken? Or is the card itself damaged? (I always try to remove it properly from the reader, but I'm sure I could have managed to hurt it somehow.) Thanks again for the input!

Try using recovery software. You'll need to use a card reader with these though:

It does matter that you have a mac as the list above includes PC software. But don't fret, freeware recovery software exists for the mac also. Give this one a try:

They've done something new here at FixYa that links don't seem to work anymore. That's a shame. Anyways copy and paste the above link into your browser.

D80-viewer and display stay black, the flash

If your camera got moisture inside and you turned it on before it had a chance to completely dry (usually takes several days) you may have caused a short circuit.

No image display on camera mode

There are different settings. You can view the past photos because you are using the viewer for that, but you have a setting off in the menu. You need to turn on view photo or preview photo after picture taken. I am not sure what it is in the Canon line, but look in your manual for the setting.

There is a message in front of my picture on the monitor

When viewing pictures in playback mode, simply turn the index finger dial (up by the shutter button) and this will change the 'mode' in which you view the pictures and should eventually get you to a setting where this information disappears.

Nikon viewer

Yes, you can download it from the Nikon website. In the UK, you need to go to the customer services section, create and account or log in, the select your camera model, and then click the software tab. Nikon View 6.2.7 Full Version is in the list. I would imagine that the procedure is similar for other nikon worldwide sites, though I don't know if you need to log in at all of them.

Alternatively, you can go into the camera setup menu, and change the USB mode from PTP to Mass Storage (I think you can do this on the 3100). Then you can use windows to simply copy the pictures over.

Alternatively, use a card reader.

No images

Look in Explorer at the .jpg files on your card to make sure they have information in each file. Next, make sure your software is set to view .jpg files,i.e. Faststone Image viewer (download.com) can be set for virtually any image format. If you viewed the images on the lcd monitor they were on the card at that time. Make sure you haven't somehow protected those image files or have accidentally reformatted it.
