You can download the Nikon software here: http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product-Archive/Compact-Digital-Cameras/25596/COOLPIX-L18.html#tab-ProductDetail.ProductTabs.Software
Have you installed the software for the camera? This model of camera has an auto focus and you should be able to adjust that through the software and if desired enable manual focus.
If you have not downloaded the software for the camera please go to the downloads section on the link below, choose your operating and download and install it.
I own Rebel XT and Canon 50mm f1.8 MKII lens with plastic mount and noticed many pictures with missed focus, either front or back focusing. Meaning objects slight forward or below the intended subject is in focus. I've sent my body and the lens to Canon for evaluation and thet adjusted my focus sensors on the body. I still have problems and there are many threads related to focusing on this camera with 50mm f1.8 that the sensors on this camera do not do so well with fast lens and prone to missed focus.
Test your camera's focusing ability with a book or magazine where you focus on just one specific line and see if it is truly in focus when you review the picture.
There really isn't any software that's required for your camera. The only thing that's on the cd that you would be missing would be the manual and then the photo storage software that really sucks to use. :)
There are many reasons why images can appear out of focus.
strangely if you think about it it is not focusing per se
like photographic cameras the focus is at infinity by default- from about 50cm - out
So if the images appear out of focus these are some of the reasons
shots taken in low light with a low ASA setting resulting in long exposure -thus camera shake.
Focus hunting- there are various methods used but if the mechanism cannot 'lock' onto something the focus motor will 'hunt'
Faulty zoom Optic Zoom mechanism.
Inadvertently set to 'Macro' mode
Grease on the lens
Careful checking of the camera- its settings- with the manual is essential before declaring the camera faulty
Don't forget the paper manual is a nodensed version of the full manual on the software disk.
