Question about ASUS CB-5216A (90D70001UAYZ) CD-RW/DVD-ROM (Combo) Burner
My combo drive sometimes reads DVD, but often it cannot even detect the DVD. But CDR/W is working properly, only problem is with DVD R.

Are the DVD's you are trying to play Dual Layer? I was having a problem like that where only some DVD's would play and others my drive would freeze up it baffled the heck out of me untill I read on one of the DVD's that wouldn't work was a Dual Layer. Im guess if your drive isn't dual layer compatible it will not play the movie. Good Luck

So it won't play movies most of the time? Time to replace the drive more than likely. When a laser gets weak, sometimes it wont read the DVD's, but will read regular cd's without problems. Eventually it won't read anything. The laser requires more power to read a dvd than a regular cd. The laser itself it adjustable, doesn't always work, but it's a sure sign that its on its way out. They are cheap to replace these days. :)
