Question about Iomega 160GB Ego HD USB 2.0/FW Red 160 GB Hard Drive

Starting to lose power...now needs to use dc adaptor

I have an iomega external hard drive (Model RPHD-U). It used to work awesome just by plugging the two usb cords into a computer. I now have to buy and use a dc adapter for to get it moving. Why? It's less then a year old. Any ideas on how to make it work just with the two usb plugs? Thanks

Thank you for helping me out.

I've tried it on 3 different computers.

    1. My laptop... it seems to work fine without attaching the dc adaptor.

    2. My work computer... it used to work fine without the dc adaptor. However, I now need to hook up the dc.

    3. School computer. It worked at first but now need to hook up the dc adaptor unless I plug it into the back usb slots and slightly shake the iomega a little.

Are you using it on a laptop or desktop?

if it's a laptop, is it plugged into power or running from battery when it has trouble?

Let me know and we'll work through this.

I need a new internal power supply for my 2tb external its an Iomega prestige. I just want the part number for it so i can order a new one.

There is no internal power supply. The unit gets it's power from the computer. A USB port has 5 Volts DC.

Inside that external enclosure of the IOmega external harddrive is just an ordinary harddrive as used in a desktop computer. A SATA harddrive.

The harddrive plugs into a small circuit board with an interface on it, or there are cables, (wires), which come from the circuit board, and plug into the back of the harddrive.

It is this small circuit board that is usually the problem.
The solution to this problem is to simply just buy an economical external enclosure, and install the harddrive out of the IOmega into it.

Just one example from a quick search for an economical SATA 3.5 external enclosure,
(Note*
A laptop harddrive is 2.5 inches across in width. 2 and 1/2 inches.
A desktop harddrive is 3.5),

Dear Sir/ Madam, I have TWO Western Digital USB

first of all , you are looking at the wrong voltages. The important voltage is the DC OUTPUT, which is the voltage the external harddrives use AND the polarity of the plug attached to the harddrive end of the cable.
if both the harddrives have say 12v dc output and both have the insignia of the center conductor being + (posative) then you can interchange them. and you CAN run a 9volt unit with 12volt DC power, but not the other way around.
Look at your power adaptors again for the OUTPUT and polarity.
should be a half-circle with lines depicting the polarity(+,-) of the center and sheild connections to the hard drives printed on both the harddrives and the power adaptors . This can also be tested with a dc volt meter while the adaptors are plugged into the wall.
DO NOT try to test the AC end while plugged in!!

Iomega external not visible

Unfortunately, Windows isn't the most efficient operating system when it comes to it's "Plug 'n Play" abilities. In my experience, external hard drives can be particularly sensitive when it comes to unplugging the data cable while navigating the drive. I've had two external drives lose all data because of that flaw in the NTFS file system. The MFT exists on every drive with NTFS storage method. If that becomes corrupt, it can render the drive useless.

The drive may have power, but that quiet beeping you hear is an indication that the reader head is stuck to the platter and may be grinding into it. There is a myth (may or may not be true) that says if you put the drive in your freezer for a few minutes, take it out, drop it from 6 inches onto a hard surface, it may knock the head loose and make the drive work again.

I tried that method, and it made the situation worse for me, but it may work for you. I would resort to that option only if nothing else fixes it.

I have an Iomega external hard drive. P/N is 31641400. model is MDHD320-U. I have been unable to locate any DC12V adapter to work on my external hard drive. Could you please assist me in finding one that...

please check the power rating and the amperage rating

you will get it as 500ma or 1amp or 1.5amp.
and as 12 volts.
so a adapter with specifications of 12v DC. 1.5 AMPS WILL WORK.

IF 1.5 AMPS IS NOT AVAILABLE USE 1 AMP THIS SHOULD ALSO WORK

IF YOU FAIL SEND THE DRIVE TO ME....
