Question about SimpleTech 250GB USB2.0 7200 RPM External 250 GB IDE Hard Drive

My SimpleTech 250 gb external hard drive has changed from being

My SimpleTech 250 gb external hard drive has usually been recognized as drive E but I plugged it in a week ago and it is now considered drive G. I haven't made any changes to my laptop (an older HP ze2000). Is there a way to change it back to being recognized as E? I run iTunes and my Kodak camera, among other lesser programs through this drive. I would like to avoid having to uninstall and reinstall all these programs and risk losing data. I am using the original cords. This drive is normally connected to a hub, so I have tried to reset the hub and plug the SimpleTech drive directly into the computer with the same result of being recognized as that G drive. I don't believe it is the computer as I was able to plug in a thumb drive and it was recognized as E, which is the usual plug for the hub.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated before I pull my hair out!

Hello,

The reason for drive letters changing is often as simple as having two plugged in at the same time. Changing them again is simple but should be done while all drives are plugged in simultaniously.

So, plug in both usb drives, then right-click on My Computer and select Manage, when the management console opens select disk management. Strating with the other USB drive, select it on the right hand side and then right-click it and select "Change drive letters and paths". Select change from the next window and select a high letter X/Y/Z from the drop down box. Then click ok.

Repeat the last few steps with the external harddrive and select E, when you're done you should have to restart to allow the changes to take place but then it will be set in. You will have to repeat this process if you change which USB port you use for the hub or if you add other additional external drives.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

SimpleTech 250 gig external drive not recognized on MacBook

It could be formatted in a different manner. See if it is detected by your mac. Go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and see if your hard drive is shown there. If it is, then the formatting of your hard drive is not compatible and you will need to reformat to be able to use it on a mac.

I asume the connection is via an USB?
Try another usb-port and see if that helps, if not try to connect the disc on another PC (maybe a friends pc) and see is that pc recognize the disc.

Good luck!
