Sharp R-1874 shuts off after 59 seconds

My microwave/convection shuts off after 59 seconds. One guy suggested I replace circuit board. Another guy says it could be several things. Any specific advice?

Mine also only runs 59 seconds. Your tip about the damper...where is the damper assy?

  • ArchH Feb 19, 2008

I have the same 59 second problem. Just exactly where is the damper assy? As I look at the front of the unit is it on the left or right side?
My microwave is mounted over the stove in a motorhome. Do I need to remove it to repair the damper assy?

I have the same problem with it shutting off after 59 seconds. We have a Sharp R-1874 Convection. We are in a motorhome. Recirculating non-vented. Any help?

Shuts down in 59 seconds. Checked with Sharp and a dealer was suggested.

Followed FixYa suggestion, Microwave is back, mounted and working great. Cost total of 16 dollars for new damper motor and a couple of hours of messing around...Thank you so much, and the wife thanks you. Guest.

Same problem noted on my SHARP R-937 (R-93ST).

I am not sure yet whether this model has a Damper assy installed....?

The 59 seconds issue could be a timer IC/uProcessor on its control panel?

My other suspect is the timer/weight setting knob wich is a Digital Control Potmeter rather than just a conventional analog?

I have the same problem with microwave shuts of after 59 sec. It is a built-in, in a 2006 hoilday rambler, we tried to take the front cover off, and this is impossible how do you remove?

  • Mr Dave Aug 24, 2008

Same problem as those listed. Shuts off in convec or Micro after 59 secs. Also in a motor home. What co-incidances that there should be so many in motorhomes. Mine is a Monaco Windsor 2004 40' PST.

I am now looking for parts before I pull it out. Any suggestions.

I am having the same problem shutting off after 59 sec. Sharp R-1874 model.
Did anyone replace the control unit? That is what we were told to do but want to make sure this is the part we need to replace because the costs is about $150.00.

Same 59 second issue with an R-1874 installed in a 2004 Monaco Diplomat Motor Home. Issue started between outings. Just looking into the possible cause and found your website. The unit was built in 11/2003.

I have the same problem. How do I get to the damper assembly. Do I need to take the unit down first?

my microwave stops after 59 seconds no matter what time I put in

  • rphilljr48 Jan 27, 2009

Same 59 seconds. In 2004 Holiday Rambler Scepter. Service tech was just here. Says Circuit board bad. Quote to fix $387.62. Ouch!! Did anyone get there's fixed? What was cause and what was fix. I can find the board for $132, was quoted $218 by tech for part $155 for labor. I took mine apart, (I watched the tech). Looks like board just unplugs in several places. Should be easy to replace. IF THAT IS THE PROBLEM. Pain in the **** pushing start button every 59 seconds.

I have struggled with mine for at least two years and finally got it fixed last night. Usually pounding on the front of the oven would get the power to come on and finally I pinned it down to tapping on the control section. Once opened up and plugged in I found a couple wires on one of the plugs when moved were causing the cut out. I then removed the circuit board and found cracked solder joints on the large pins of one of the connectors. I re-solder all the pins on that connector and the oven is fully repaired. Mid 1990 soldering robots didn't use enough heat on larger pins. This causes a fatigue crack after years of service and intermittent loose connection problems. Easy fix if you can solder and know where the cracks are.

I had the same problem. Turned out to be the micro switch and damper motor. I replaced both myself and fixed the problem for less than $40.00. The best advice I got was replace the switch, reconnect the motor and make sure the motor runs through a damper door cycle. It didn't run, even though it showed continuity and had power, so I replaced the motor which solved the problem. The micro switch which is activated by the cam on the damper motor has to be cycled within one minute, or the unit shuts itself off. The damper motor on my model R-1870 is found in the right rear section of the assembly when facing it. You have to remove the unit, and remove the outer casing to get to it. The damper is a simple sheet metal door, activated by the motor, and the switch mounts at the top of the motor and is activated by the same cam that activates the door.

That would be a problem in the damper assembly, either a bad switch or motor, or the damper door is jammed or blocked.

Consult the attached diagram for general reference.

The damper switch is the same as the primary interlock (door) switch.

    .
Its location varies by model, but you'll have to take the outer cover off to find it.

In the next couple weeks mine will be going into a shop that only repairs microwaves.
I can't get it unmounted from my motorhome so that has to be solved first.
I will post back here when I get the final fix.

My problem turned out to be the damper motor.

    $14.95 for the motor.

Total bill was $106.18 which included removing from motorhome, repairing and then reinstalling in the motorhome.

Damper assy is somewhere inside the microwave. Not too easy to get to I assume.

My problem turned out to be the control switch which was a $15 bill plus another $90 in labor. I had to remove the microwave from the motor home and take it in for repair. The removal can also be handled through the motor home dealership and the cost will be higher.

Sharp microwave r1870 only runs for 59 seconds

If it consistently runs for exactly 59 seconds, and shuts off, it's probably the control panel.

If it runs approximately that length of time, you might have a defective thermal protector on the magnetron, or the magnetron is running too warm for some reason.

I just had an appliance repair man check my Sharp R-1870 microwave for the 59 second shut off problem. He said it was the main circuit board. Has anyone run into this problem. Everything I google says...

I've had a similar problem with a 1983 Sharp Carousel microwave. It turned out to be a faulty door micro switch, the contact didn't stay closed inside it for very long.

We have a sharp R-967 combination microwave/conventional oven. It now switches itself off after 59 seconds of operation regardless of which time and/or which function has been selected. Can this be easiliy...

Hi,

I see its some time ago now that you posted this and perhaps you've fixed your micro already or replaced with a new one. I have the same Sharp r-967 microwave which had the same 59 second problem. I researched a bit online found the sevice manuals and tracked the problem down to be the damper motor. I managed to buy one online and replace it quite easily. There are some diagrams online when searching for this problem but for different sharp models where the damper is near the door fixings. Its not the case on r967, its behind the circuit board and easy to remove with a stubby screwdriver. You can find spares from this place. 5 minute job. The 59 second thing is likely to be the either the door switches or the damper motor. Switches are between £5-10. All mine were fine so didnt have to replace any. A quick voltmeter test can check them.

I paid £26 in delivery. Hope it helps if not too late!

The microwave shuts off after 59 seconds. You can push the START button and it will start again but shut off after 59 seconds. The convection oven component does the same thing.

This is a problem in one of the damper-related components, either the switch or motor or the damper door may be binding.

The damper is a door inside that opens or closes depending on cooking mode. If the controller senses that the door is not in the right position, it will shut down the cook cycle.

Sharp models stop after 59 seconds.

See the attached sample drawing for a typical damper assembly.

We have the applicable service manuals for these models and have uploaded them to our site here, here and here to help you.

If a switch is all you need, we offer a universal type for only $5 postpaid which you can order here.

R-1874 shuts down after 59 seconds

That switch is supposed to tell the computer if the damper door is open or closed. If it does not go to zero ohms, the CPU doesn't know what to do. Check the thermistor too...... just in case...
