Question about Canon GL2 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

Open Question

Microphone does not work with MS Messenger using firewire

I have the latest version of MS messenger with Video conferencing enabled running on Windows XP on a media PC.
I connected my Canon GL2 using firewire and downloaded Canon's DV Messenger from the Canon website.
The image works fine and tested with a friend but the microphone does not work.  I cannot get microphone signal on the Messenger setup wizard.  When using video editing software everything works fine.  I noticed that Messenger does not recognize 'Canon DV camera' while other software does.
Any help will be highly appreciated.

This is due to the Codec's. The Video's that you capture from the Camcorder have different Sound format than what you have installed in the player in your Computer.

You need to Update the Codec's or you need to use a Player that have the Format. Let me give you the Best Player i know :-

Download the player and play the File in the above player.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

connect the firewire cable - MSN Messenger detects it. Apparently there are issues with Yahoo Messenger. WARNING: you will need 512k+ upstream, you're pumping DV quality video at 30fps rather than standard webcam resolution of 320x240@12fps!

Failure using camera as webcam

Step 1: The "Tools" menu of Windows Live Messenger

1. Recover Windows Live Messenger in our software if you do not have it yet.
2. Start the installation of the software.
3. Once this is done, go to the Tools menu software.

In this menu, two links are important in order to properly configure your camera:"Setting audio and video" and "Parameters of the webcam."This is the first that we will discuss first and foremost, the second used primarily to adjust the parameters of the image in the secondary stage but we are dealing with. Launch therefore setup wizard and click on "Next".

Step 2: The setting of loudspeakers

1. Select your hardware in the menu.
2. Check the box if you use a helmet.
3. Test finally your sound output in order to adjust the volume.

It is possible that you find in the menu several choices. That means you have several elements in your computer capable of transmitting sound, a dedicated card and your motherboard, for example. In this case, make sure to select well the correct input, what you quickly verify the test by loudspeakers.

Step 3: At the turn of the microphone

1. Select your sound source.
2. Start talking to your microphone.
3. Observe the cursor, if it moves, your microphone is working.

Two remarks on the stage configuration. On the one hand, if your camera has no microphone, you must go through a device that you must annex plug into the pink on your sound card. On the other hand, if your mouse does not work, you may have selected the wrong input device sound. Take particular care in this setting and not leave this page only when the cursor s'agitera,
indicating that your voice is recognized by the software.

Step 4: Turning finally to the image

1. Specify this time the source of the video.
2. Observe the window of return: if your setup is satisfactory, your image should appear.
3. Adjust the frame rendering through the "Option" button.

Capturing video

I had to get a Firewire cable to make this cam work with Vista. I was told Firewire is faster (?) and much better video quality because it is made for loads of data. I can't tell any much of difference from USB, but it does work with Firewire. So, basically try a Firewire cable.

You will need the VL-Z1 CD-ROM Drivers/Software to get your computer to recognize it. The software comes with your camera when you buy it. You can find a replacement by clicking the above link.

Is your firewire controller turned on or enabled in the BIOS? Maybe its off. when your PC boots up, use the F2 key or del to get into th e BIOS, under peripherals, there may be a firewire controller that can be disabled/enabled. Check that and get back to us.

Canon zr200

This is the description of the feature you need: "Have friends in far-off places? Turn your ZR200 into a Webcam for Internet Video Chat with Microsoft Windows Messenger through IEEE1394. It's all possible thanks to the DV Messenger2 software, available as a free download for ZR200 owners. DV Messenger2 allows you to control the zoom and focus of your ZR200 or the camcorder of the person you are chatting with. Preview thumbnails and transfer photos. You can even watch and control the video playback of either camcorder right from your computer." You can download DV Messenger Version 2 only after registering with Canon, see the bottom of the following page: I believe the drivers are included in the download. Please update the question & let us know if the information given was useful to you - Good Luck!
