Question about Sony Computers & Internet

DVD/CD drive burns, spins, won't read DVDs or CDs

I’m not real good with theterminology so I may have difficulty explaining this correctly. We have an Optiarc AD7203S DVD/CD rom drive, this is a SATA. We are using Vista Home Premium on a refurbished Gateway GT5678. The DVD/CD drive worked until recently. The drive is visible as a DVD/CD rom drive under “My Computer”. The drivers all say they are up-to-date. I got it toburn a document file onto a blank CD using Windows Media Player. Then I was able to get it to open the newly created file on the CD disc. However, when I removed the CD and inserted my son’s game (a DVD), it said thatno disc was inserted. It will not recognize the disc at all. I also purchased a disc that was supposed to clean the lens and it will notrecognize it. It will not recognize any other DVDs or CDs. It spins but the autorun never comes up. It says to put a disc in the drive but when you do, it still doesn't know there is anything in there. I have disconnected the DVD/CD drive and reconnected it. I have also tried the ''regedit'' command and trying to delete the ''upper'' and ''lower'' filters; however, they were not listed in this file. TigerDirect won't help because it is a refurbished Gateway and is over 90 days old. Gateway spent a few minutes with us on the phone and then said to just buy a new DVD/CD drive. Any ideas? I'm afraid I may buy a new one and then find out that it doesn't work either due to it being something else. Thanks! Judy

CD and DVD use different lasers. You appear to have a bad or out of adjustment laser. Replace the drive.

SOURCE: pioneer dvd rw-dvr- k16RS ATA drive can't read any cds

I have the same drive, mine will read part of a cd/dvd until it gets to the outer edge of the disk. Then it complains of corrupt data, or no disk. Removing the disk didn't help.

After a little experimenting I found that the Mechanism that moves the laser radially to the disk has a problem. It seems to lock up when it gets to the outer sectors. I found that if I moved it (by hand) to the center and then reinserted the disk it would recognize the disk. I still didn't read the out edges all the time.

The solution is to replace the drive. Newegg has one

SOURCE: Will not read DVD discs.

It looks like you have a lens problem, DVD and CD use a different error correction and different track format.
A dirty lens can read CD but not DVD.
Tru first using a lens cleaner like this ones:

If it does not work you can try cleaning the lens directly with cotton and isopropyl alcohol, you will need to undo the screws at the button and to take apart the cover. Unplug power when doinfg this.

If it still does not work, since you aready reinstalled the firmware, the lens may be faulty.
You can order the lens pickup from factory and replace it.

Can't detect device or fix drivers - A few suggestions and a possible patch

I lost my CD/DVD drives after installing Windows updates in Vista along with multiple other problems as well (warnings, color problems, freezing, installation failures)- all systems and both combo drives had been working perfectly with no new software other than Windows and HP pc updates. I tried multiple viable options you may consider:

I tried restoring the computer to a week it worked; I tried updating the device drivers in the device manager but it came back as 'drivers up to date' and working with no rollback options; I tried uninstalling the devices completely and reinstalling them in the device manager; I tried a full system repair in my pc tools; I went to the RAID Controller manufacturer's site to update that (see your dvd connections in the device manager 'view'); I searched for DVD hardware driver updates and patches; I tried recovering the original drivers through the recovery module; I even tried a complete pc recovery twice. The complete recovery worked until I got to the final few Windows updates and printer installations and then I was back at square one, which narrowed it down for me.

I've been struggling for over a week on the this issue in Vista with no luck regardless of effort for my DVD/CD combo drives, but have two ideas that may help someone:

1. I lost my card readers at the same time and was able to recover them by going to my device manager and uninstalling all my USB root hubs along with all the problem drivers at one time. After restart, a lot of my other problems disappeared as well, but not the DVD drives (they weren't USB connected). I've seen lots of USB issues in my search so gave it a try - this may work if you have a USB connection to your DVD drives.

2. While restoring and updating in little pieces, I found that the problems didn't come up with the Windows updates until after the Windows updates were installed and I began installing my printers and related photo and graphics programs. One of the ArcSoft programs had a patch specifically for disappearing DVD drives at http://www.arcsoft.com/support/downloads/download_patches/vista.asp. You may want to see if you are running any of their listed programs that the patch is for or check your graphics/photo programs for patches. The listed ArcSoft programs included PhotoImpression 5/6, VideoImpression 2, ShowBiz DVD 2, Slide Show Maker, TotalMedia, Picture Saver, QuickDVD, G DATA VideoStudio 2006 Pro, ADS MediaTV, NTI DVD Player, and Ego Backup. That was just for their patch, but there may be more out there. I suspect there may have been a tweaking of a cross-platform Windows files affecting compatability.

Hope that helps someone out there!

Does the toshiba sd 2502 , can it burn cds

It is a DVD ROM drive which stands for DVD Read Only Memory. In other words, this drive is meant to only PLAY DVDs and CDs but NOT save data to them.

To burn CDs you need a CD burner. Burners are of 3 types:

CD writer only burns and reads CDs.

Combo drive reads CDs and DVDs but only burns CDs.

Super drive burns and reads from CDs and DVDs.

As you go higher in functionality, the price also increases. Check your needs before you plan to buy one. Also compare prices of all the drives. Note: burn-able media costs are separate.

Reads cds and dvds, but won't burn to them

Your drive can only burn CDs, not DVDs. To burn CDs you need to purchase a blank CD-R or CD-RW at a local computer store. You can burn a CD-R only once but a CD-RW can erased and written upon many time.
Try Nero software for burning.

My samsungsd616tdvd drive cannot play or read dvd-rw cds.

Please note that the formats of DVD and CD are quite different. Whereas a DVD drive can handle both DVD and CD, a CD drive can only handle cd formats. Furthermore, a drive that reads both formats does not necessarily mean it can handle the writing aspect ok. You need a drive that is capable of writing/burning DVD. Most drives that come along with pcs can only write CDs but able to read both. So check your drive to see whether or not it can write on DVDs ok. Good luck

Dvd recording

I had the same problem and spent some time looking up this issue. I have a sony dvd player and it seems to have trouble reading almost any burnt dvd or cd. I have read that sonys seem to prefer the cheap dvds and cds for burning. It seems the cheap'O dvd players play burnt dvds and cds better that the nice ones, go figure.

There is more info out there about making sure to burn dvds and cds in the correct format.
You can try different burning software that has more options than just vista.
If you are creating a dvd from a movie file such as an avi or mpeg, please explain more on what you are doing and trying to accomplish.

G'luck

Reads all but DVD-Help PLEASE

When you say it won?t read are you trying to play commercial DVD movies or read DVD data disks? If you're trying to play movies then you need a couple of things the first being some type of player program. Real player works as does Windows media player but usually DVD drives come with a striped down version of PowerDVD or WinDVD. If you in fact have a player installed and when a DVD is inserted in your drive it doesn't play it may not be configured to automatically play DVDs. Try opening your player program and trying to manually play your DVD. Let us know if you have any success or if you need more assisted. If you do let us know what player program and operating system you have and any error messages that may appear.
