Drive NOT being recognized by WinXP

Hi,
Yesterday I accidentally knocked over my Fantom Titantinum 500 GB USB HD on its side (it was just a slight hand swipe, that's all); then now all of the sudden the drive is not working anymore.
Windows does NOT recognize this drive at all even after I uninstall and then re-install the USB Mass Storage Device Driver.  BTW, the Driver uninstall and re-install fine; but the computer is just not recognizing the drive at all.  Please help, thanks!

    Hi,

First of all, thanks for the speedy reply and help, really appreciate it! :)

You were right!  My drive is making strange low level noise; it seems the drive was spinning and spinning; but nothing happened.  Could this be a hardware issue?  Please help, thanks.

Put your ear to the drive and verify if it is making any strange low level sounds. Check to make sure the usb connection wasnt affected. YOu wont need a driver as it appears to be hardware related. Either the enclosure or drive may be failing.

If it still has a valid warranty, exercise the warranty to get a free replacement.

Otherwise, open the enclosure, and separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, and connect the disk-drive as a 'slave' disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if the adapter was the problem.

I can not locate a driver for my Fantom Titanium II (TFD500C16) 500 GB USB Hard Drive. Do you know where?

Your device should not need drivers Fte Fantom/Titanium drives are fully supported by both Windows and Mac OS's.
Try replacing the cable or using a different USB port.
Sorry I cannot be of more help, The drive itself may be damaged, You can test this by physically removing the drive itself from the case and installing it internally to your system....If the drive functions properly, then the problem is within the board inside the casing.

Ext 500G Fantom HD turns on but won't boot up.

Hello,

First of all make sure that the USB port that you are using to connect it to your PC is a USB 2.0 port, and not USB 1.0.

Also if it came with an external power, connect it to the external power before putting on your PC.

This is because the voltage supplied by USB 1.0 is lower than that of USB 2.0 and therefore might not be enough to power up your USB Drive.

After making sure about this, power up your system, and plug the flash drive, then Right-Click on my computer icon, select manage, then go to Disk Management Option.

On the Disk management option Page you should see ALL the drives installed on your system, including the hidden ones, so what you will just do is, try and locate the one representing your flash drive, and right click on it. then select "Change Drive letter and Paths", and give the drive any new, unique letter (i.e alphabet) different from the ones already on your system, and click on OK.

This should make your Hard Drive to be detected automatically.

Kindly keep me posted about the problem

Hope this helps you out.

Goodluck!

After opening it up, was the 500GB disk-drive WARM or COLD to the touch? If WARM, the drive was spinning. If COLD, check that the drive is getting "power" from your USB port, or from the AC adapter.

Can you remove the disk-drive, and temporarily connect it to another computer, to see if it is a problem with the enclosure and/or the external power-supply, rather than just the disk-drive?

Is the disk-drive still under warranty ?
Original manufacturer's warranty?
Extended warranty purchased from the retail store?
Extended warranty offered by your credit-card company?

Same thing

if its making a loud clicking noise i would guess that the hard drive got jolted hard while shipping if possible send it back and get another one or if you have another hard drive put it in install windows and discard other drive very rare for them to get damaged during shipping(maybe you can get them to just send hd(hard drive)and drivers instead of whole computer!!!

You can try and take the drive out of the enclosure and hooking it directly up. Most likely the shock has hurt the drive itself. If the unit is still under warranty then I would have it serviced before doing anything. If you need further assistance please let me know.
Thank you,

Data recovery from External HD

Matthew,
First thing you should do is remove the drive from enclosure and connect it direcly to the PC or via another USB enclosure.
If it still doesn't power up then most likely the PCB is dead. You can try to find another drive of the same model and swap the PCBs. But as far as I know often this doesn't work.
Here's some info about burnt PCB (in the beginning): http://datacent.com/datarecovery/hdd/western_digital/
Take care.
