Question about Weber Q Grill

1 Answer

Low gas flow - low heat

I am running the Weber Q off of a 20 lb propane can with the adapter hose. It has worked fine for most of a tank. All of a sudden it stopped putting out full heat. One clue might be that if I turn suddenly from low to high there is a brief surge of gas that subsides after a second or so. It seems to me that this might be a problem with flow in the regulator. Could it be dirty? Defective? How do I fix it? Have small Q grill and used it once this season. Flames seemed a little low. Tonight they are so low they barely stay lit. ONlyby turning the perimeter flame off can I get enough heat to cook in the middle. I apparently have gas but no pressure or? Thanks Mike

Hi Lyon,
Yeah, it's the regulator. Fortunately, they're cheap and easy to replace!

You can look on line for part number 80012. Or you can remove yours and take it to Home Depot or Lowe's in the outdoor cooking area and match up a replacement. <--- they're all the same... just make sure the compression fitting (the brass end) is the same size.

The only other thing I could recommend is this... Turn the LP bottle completely off. Then completely remove the big plastic knurled knob from the tank. Now replace the knob back onto the tank (all the way and make sure it's tight). Then S L O W L Y turn the gas back on. Now try your pit. If you get the same flame, it's the regulator. If you get full flame, you just reset the safety device inside the tank.

I'm betting regulator. Good luck and happy cookin'!

Why wont my old grill work with new propane tank

Turn off propane. Disconnect propane tank from barbecue. Open burner valves for about 20 seconds. Close valves. Reattach propane tank. Slowly open propane tank valve. Turn on burner and ignite

My Weber Summit Grill is new. Works fine with new LP tank. When tank is half full grill lights but does not heat very high. Have had this problem with multiple LP tanks.

The overfill protection device in LP tanks will cause this problem if you open valve quickly. Try closing the valve on tank, unscrewing the tank grill regulator to relieve pressure from hose and then screw it back on. Open valve on tank very slowly then open the burner farthest away from tank first to light. then light the remaining burners while working your way towards the tank side. This has fixed my problem of low heat several times but that is also caused when tank is getting low so make sure you do have propane in the tank. for a 20 lb tank, and empty tank is 17.5 lbs so a full one would weigh 37.5 lbs.

Model Q200, Propane model Get no flame on the burner. Apparently, getting no gas. Something seems to be stopped up. What to do?

Whether you're using a 20 Lb Propane Grill Tank or a screw in gas canister, the solution to the problem is the same .

1. Be sure you have enough gas in the tank or canister to maintain proper ignition.

2, If the above checks out OK. Turn the LP tank valve OFF or if you're using a screw-on canister
turn the gas valve OFF.

3. Disconnect the hose from the tank or unscrew and remove the gas canister.

4. Wait 5 minutes and reconnect the hose to the tank or reattach the canister to the gas valve.

5. Open the gas valve VERY, VERY SLOWLY (Slow Motion, slow). Once the valve is full open, light
the burner & turn it to HIGH. Did the burner light and does the flame height look correct?
If so, you solved the problem. Remember to always open the tank valve Very, Very Slowly.

if the above didn't solve the problem, you will either need to replace the Hose/Regulator Assembly or the Gas Valve/ Canister Holder. The Hose/Regulator Assembly you can pickup from any home center or hardware store that sell grills & accessories for about $30.00. If it's the Gas Valve/Canister Holder, you will have to purchase that from Weber or from Factory Appliance Parts http://www.appliancefactoryparts.com/gasgrillparts/brands/weber/q200.html Part # WEB4195 ($29.99) The adapter hose is also available there if you want to make it a one stop shop for $32.99

I hope ths helped you and thanks for choosing FixYa. Happy Grilling!!

Won't light properly or vary the flame

Hello,
You're probably turning the LP tank valve on too fast. Close the tank valve, disconnect it and reconnect it. Then very slowly turn on the tank valve. Make sure all your grill knobs are closed. Light one at a time and turn to low setting. After they are all lit, slowly turn up the heat on each as needed. Hope this helps. Douglas

Cannot get good flame on the burner of my baby weber grill. I've tried cleaning it checked hose, tank, regulator, seems to have good flow, but low flame only, even when set in high????????

I had this problem with a brand new grill so it wasn't grease in the hose. Due to the new propane regulators you have to turn the propane tank on for at least a minute before turning the grill to light. Let the tank sit in the light position for five seconds and then you light the grill. This will keep air from getting into the intake hose and will keep your gas flame roaring high.

I was only able to get the grill up to 250 degrees before I found this fix posted on the Weber site. It is listed as the number one solution in the FAQ section.

My weber gas grill will not heat up past 300F

Hi John,

I just experienced the same exact problem ! I just bought a brand new Weber E-310 a 3 burner grill.
After I seasoned it up with cooking oil,I turned all the burners to high, opened the tank and clicked electrnic button several times , the grill was on then I went inside, I came out about an half-hour later and it was saying around 275 degrees..
I looked into my manual and there is a gas limit control valve that shuts down gas flow, when it thinks there is too much gas flow.

Sloution;
Turn the propane gas knob to off
Turn the gas grill knobs to Off.
Click the igniter several times to clear out any gas.
Then unscrew the regulator from the tank,( I then blew into the tank hole and regulator),
Screw back on the regulator to the propane tank.
I then clicked igniter again couple of times.
Now open your propane tank.
Then turn on front burner while clicking igniter, this will lite 1st burner.
Then turn 2nd burner on low then to high.
And if you have 3rd burner or more, turn low then to high!

John I did this and my grill went to 600 plus in a few minutes!!

The problem was turning the gas grill knobs on first then opening the tank then lighting...
You have to open propane tank with knobs off, THEN AS SOON AS YOU TURN ON 1ST KNOB, YOU MUST IGNITE ...

My Q 120 grill will not produce a high enough flame with hose adapter for 20 pound lp tank , works fine with small tanks. I have had problem for several years. Have replaced adapter hose and regulator.

Often with a big bottle, people turn the gas off and on at the big bottle and leave the grill valve open. That makes the regulator see a low pressure on its output, which is a potential leak indication. It goes into "bypass". Try turning off the tank, turning off the grill valve, and turning on the tank, then waiting 20-ish seconds before turning the grill valve on.

Low gas flow - low heat

The only way you can fix the low flame, low heat problem, is to remove the grill, take a medium sized paper-clip (staightened out) and clean out each individual hole on the steel burner, flame tube. (I'm sure there's a technical name for it).

Since they (the holes on the flame tube) face up unprotected, directly under the grill cooking surface they tend to get blocked quickly with continous use and certain foods, like pork ribs. Bad design unless all you plan on grilling is hot dogs.

There are about 500 individual holes, so plan on being there a while. Or in other words, do it close to the cooler.

I've been tempted to toss the thing into the woods a bunch of times over the past 2 years I've owned the dumb thing.

Good luck!
