My 25-yr old Oster Golden A5 stopped running. It tries to run when I shake it, plug and unplug it. Sounds like there may be a loose piece inside. Any ideas; can I somehow take it apart and fix it?
If the power lever (the tab that moves the blade back and forth) is not moving with the blade off, or only moving sometimes, chances are that you have a stripped bakelite gear. Take the two screws out of the cover plate and remove it. Remove the lever (the nylon part that moves the blade) Remove the link (the metal part that the lever connects with). Remove the bakelite gear (the part that the link fits down over). You should then be able to see if the teeth are chewed or worn off to the point that the armature gear will not turn the bakelite gear. If that is the case, replace the gear. Amazon carries both single speed and 2 speed gears under Oster A5 clipper parts. All these parts should have a light coat, where they move, of lithium grease, and the two pads (one on each side of the lever) should be oiled. You might also check the condition of your brushes (under the caps on each side of the clipper. Take cap off, remove cover from brush, remove spring and brush to see how worn they are). Good luck.

have you had the blades sharpened by a professional company, you should be able to get around 25 cuts per blade if correctly sharpened. If you have what about the clippers try replacing the Lever which is located at the drive end and goes from side to side.
How old is your clipper, Oster clippers need to be adjusted for more power and speed, also what clipper blade are you using to cut the horse hair and how long is the horse hair, Also the blade may not be sharp, some new blade are sharp maybe defective.
If the clippers are new, it is not likely that the problem is internal. Sometimes, when the blade is put on the clipper, it needs an extra little push to clip firmly behind the blade catch (you can hear a little click). Try that.
remove the gearbox cover (nameplate) make sur the worm gear from the armature is spinning when switched on, if not turn off there is an internal problem. if it does move then check the condition of the gear it may have some teeth missing.
Ok turn your clipper on and hold it still in one hand whilst with the other hold the cable near the end of the clipper and bend it, rotate and twist if your clipper cuts in and out you have a break in the cable which is tricky to fit but our web site Help section can help.
