SOURCE: Royal CIA12 crosscut shredder overload light came on.

Unplug immediately and wait 20 mins to see if motor will "cool-down"...when plugged back in hopefully the Overload light will be OFF....unless you have it completely jammed up in which case try running it in reverse if the overload light is OFF.
If the overload light wont go out you may need pcb...contact Royal at 1-800-524-0799 for further parts assistance.

Shredder will not work in automatic mode

There might be a tiny scrap of paper blocking the sensor, which will keep the motor running.

My fellowes ps-70 shredder has a light on and it's not working

If the shredder is the kind that turns on when you insert paper, it may have an optical sensor that is dirty or blocked. Try blowing off the sensor with some canned air. The sensor is usually located in the center of the paper path slot. Also check that the bin is completely closed. Sometimes a tab on the door is bent or broken so that the shredder thinks the door is open. The tab activates a switch which tells the shredder that the door is safely closed. Fellowes has a lot of good tips on their website.

Dear Michael,
Here is some generic information about shredders that may help you.
Most of the shredders have a micro switch that "senses" if the paper has been introduced to the shredding slot. These micro switches are activated by a little arm/leveler that touches the paper and activates de contact inside the shredder housing. Also, note that some shredders may have an optical sensor that may be "clogged" with paper dust.
If you shredder does not stop, the sensor may be stuck in a on position, or, in case it has optical sensor may be detecting dust or a little piece of paper may be blocking the optical sensor and keeping the motor running.
I hope this gives you some light in further investigating your problem.
Good luck!

No power. Seems to be overloaded

Check the Power Ensure that the shredder top is firmly placed in the shredder basket if the unit will not operate. If the top is not in place the feeder will not work and accept any paper. Make sure it is firmly plugged into the wall outlet and that the outlet is active. Rest the Shredder Let the shredder cool down if the shredder has been running continuously for a long time. It may have overheated and needs to be left in the off position for at least 30 minutes to reset. Verify the basket is empty or not too full as that will cause the shredder to deactivate. Clear Paper Jam Rotate the shredder into "Auto" and reverse to loosen any paper jam that is stopping the gears. Pull out any papers that are sticking out from the shredder feeder. If there is no progress then unplug the shredder and remove the shredder top from the bin. Turn it upside down and use tweezers to free any paper that is blocking the gear. Auto Mode Not Working Select the "Auto" option and feed paper into the center of the feeder tray if the shredder is only working in reverse mode. The sensor is located in the middle of the feeder tray and could be blocked by jammed paper. Use an index card to firmly unblock any paper that could be blocking the sensor.

Shredder won't shred. can't hear motor in the forward setting only in reverse

Silverfox007:

There is a paper sensor at the throat of the machine that turns the machine on when it is activated by the paper when the paper is inserted. Something has happened to that sensor. Unplug the machine and remove the shredder head from the basket. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws at the bottom of the shredder head and open the shredder head. Look where the paper is fed into the machine and you will see the sensor. It may be unplugged/wire broken/sensor flag broken off... You'll know what to do when you identify the problem.

Shredder

If your unit has a mechanical paper feed sensor located in the center of the paper feed area there may be paper behind it causing switch not to activate. If it is an electronic sensor you probally have a burned out sensor, switch or a bad pc board. You will need to contact manufacturer for info on part replacement.
