Check Printer Light Keeps Flashing on C3180 PhotoSmart

Hi,

The check printer light for a COLOR cartridge, that was refilled about a month ago, keeps flashing, the light for the black is fine. It printed fine until this morning when it began to smear three alternate lines around the top of the page. I thought that the cartridge needed cleaning, so I took it out and cleaned it. However, after re-seating the cartridge, the light kept flashing. After cleaning the contacts in the printer, I got the same results.

I am sure that the cartridge is fine as it is relatively new (filled only once), full of ink and the 3 colors blot fine on tissue.

I read on FixYa that there is a chip inside the cartridge that when read it tells if the cartridge was refilled and then gives an error and the way to circumvent is to have 3 empty cartridges and rotate them to fool the printer. Do I really need to find 3 empty cartridges (If so, why 3?), or would just one be enough?

Thanks

No, you do not need 3 cartridges or anything like that. Some cartridges have chips. Yours do not. If the light keeps blinking it means that one of the electrical contacts on the cartridge has blown and now the printer doesn't recognize it. Try printing something, you will get a message "problem with color cartridge" or "color cartridge missing". That means that the printer doesn't recognize it. I suggest you buy a new one. Or, if you have an old one, try putting it in and see if the light still blinks.

Try using a new HP ink cartridge. I had the same problem with a printer I purchased off of CraigsList even though the ink level was good. I installed a new color HP ink cartridge and it printed without a problem.

Estimated ink levels are incorrect

The simple solution is to buy the HP cartridges. Often times,.. MOST times, aftermarket ink cartridges and refill kits are an inferior product. The difference is not always noticeable right away, but almost always rears it's head in the end. This is usually due to the ink being of a different viscosity than the original ink. Which leads to sloppy prints, sensor errors, leaky or dead jets.
Personally I recommend everyone buy Laser printers. With prices where they are these days, there is no reason for anyone to buy an inkjet printer. Lasers will cost more up front, but are much cheaper per page and generally longer lasting.

I have a hp c3180 photosmart

Printer manufacturers include chips inside the catridges. When the same cartridge is used the printer reads the chip and finds that you have refilled the cartridge and returns the error. The simplest way to get around is to have have 3 empty cartridges and rotating them one after the other. This way you can fool the printer and get around the check!
