Question about Toshiba Portege M400-S4032 Notebook

1 Answer

Changing the drive letter

I was given a Portege M400 to wipe clean and put on a new OS.  Usally this is a piece of cake.  Well this one is not.  when i go to put a clean copy of an OS it says that there is is no drive installed in the machine.  Now when I use Vista it shows a drive by the letter of X, and it is unaccessable.  It also says there is is no drive and/or the drivers for the drive need to be installed.  Locating the drivers seems impossible.  Is there a back door way to change the drive letter? Or?
Thank you
confused

If im not mistaken, you need a RAID driver for this model. I don't recall, but does this thing have a floppy drive built in? Or do you happen to have an external? You might be able to use the cdrom to complete this, never tried this way, in the event you dont have a floppy drive.
Visit this page - http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_modItemList.jsp?moid=1363702&rpn=PPM41U&ct=DL&BV_SessionID=@@@@0308016801.1193190290@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccchaddmflilldicgfkceghdgngdgmm.0
Download the RAID driver relevant to the OS your going to install. Let's say for XP. After downloading, extract the files in the archive. You will find a folder named Drivers. The files in that folder, need to go on a floppy disk. If you dont have a floppy disk, you may need to make a trip to your local computer store and pick up a USB Floppy drive.
Insert the XP install cd. When the screen turns blue you'll see an instruction to load a third party driver at the bottom of the screen. It says to hit F6. So once the screen turns blue, tap the F6 a few times.... XP will eventually ask you for a driver disk, at this point, you insert the floppy disk into the floppy drive. And hit S in order to specify additional devices.
The rest is pretty easy from there. You should be able to continue on and install windows.
The reason it doesn't see the drive, is because Windows does not recognize the Raid controller that the drive is connected too. Thus, you need to load the driver for it from the F6 funtion during the OS setup. Have questions, let me know.

The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Good luck!

You need to re install OS.
There is a built in OS in your hard drives hidden partition.
Turn on your laptop and hold down '0' while rebooting.

That is holding down the number zero. Then the steps on how to reinstall OS will appear

How/where do I insert the SIM card? Thanks in advance

It is on the right hand side of the laptop above the dvd drive. There will most likely be a blank piece of plastic that protects the opening, if you press on this blank it will release and can be pulled out of the way, this blank and the memory card only fit one way and when you put the card in, it will click in place and lock, to unlock simply push in on the card and will unlock and can be pulled out. Below is the service manual, look on page 249, chapter 4.3.2
