Question about Toshiba Portege M400-S4032 Notebook

Changing the drive letter

I was given a Portege M400 to wipe clean and put on a new OS.  Usally this is a piece of cake.  Well this one is not.  when i go to put a clean copy of an OS it says that there is is no drive installed in the machine.  Now when I use Vista it shows a drive by the letter of X, and it is unaccessable.  It also says there is is no drive and/or the drivers for the drive need to be installed.  Locating the drivers seems impossible.  Is there a back door way to change the drive letter? Or?
Thank you

Re: Changing the drive letter

If im not mistaken, you need a RAID driver for this model. I don't recall, but does this thing have a floppy drive built in? Or do you happen to have an external? You might be able to use the cdrom to complete this, never tried this way, in the event you dont have a floppy drive.
Visit this page -
Download the RAID driver relevant to the OS your going to install. Let's say for XP. After downloading, extract the files in the archive. You will find a folder named Drivers. The files in that folder, need to go on a floppy disk. If you dont have a floppy disk, you may need to make a trip to your local computer store and pick up a USB Floppy drive.
Insert the XP install cd. When the screen turns blue you'll see an instruction to load a third party driver at the bottom of the screen. It says to hit F6. So once the screen turns blue, tap the F6 a few times.... XP will eventually ask you for a driver disk, at this point, you insert the floppy disk into the floppy drive. And hit S in order to specify additional devices.
The rest is pretty easy from there. You should be able to continue on and install windows.
The reason it doesn't see the drive, is because Windows does not recognize the Raid controller that the drive is connected too. Thus, you need to load the driver for it from the F6 funtion during the OS setup. Have questions, let me know.

Bootmgr missing

You need to re install OS.
There is a built in OS in your hard drives hidden partition.
Turn on your laptop and hold down '0' while rebooting.

That is holding down the number zero. Then the steps on how to reinstall OS will appear

I cant install windows 7 on toshiba m400-s4032, its saying

It is possible that your model is supported for Windows 7, if it was manufactured before 2007. No models made prior to 2007 are supported.
If you look at this page of supported units, you will notice the Portege M400 has an asterisk beside it. Read the note at the bottom for those units so marked, your model would be one of those units.

Check out the bulletins on how to upgrade to Win7 here and see if your specific model is supported.

I wish to remove the broken charger port of my toshiba portege m500 and replace it with a new one. Although i dont want to randomly takes things off it until get to the charger port. help would be much...

You are fortunate as it appears that your DC Jack plugs into the motherboard via a harness, so there should be no soldering required. Clicking this link will take you to a nice step by step with detailed pictures on removing the motherboard on a Portege M400:, it should be close enough to your M500 to get the gist of the procedure you will execute. I would follow the dis-assembly until you can access the DC Jack, replace it, and reverse the procedure at that point to reassemble your Portege. At the bottom of each page is a link to the next page up to the removal of the mother board, but you won't be going that far.
Take a look at the step by step and the photos to see if you think it will help with your repair and please let us know what you think?

Toshiba Portege M400-S4031 Windows XP replaced hard drive SATA used restore cd from Toshiba after loading setup screen says finished and to restart but when restarted computer error (can not find hard...

.Thats because your restore cd does not contain the Sata driver. Go to toshiba site and find the sata driver. You will need a floppy drive (a usb one would be good). Burn the driver to a floppy and load it into the drive. Now when you start to install the restore cd at some point near the beginning you will need to tap F6 (it tells you at the bottom of the screen) which tells xp to look at the floppy. It will install the driver and continue installing xp. simples??

Toshiba Portege M400 screen turned off - can't get back on.

reboot, keep tapping F8 key, until you get to the system start up page ( black screen with writing )
the top offer is called
" last known good"
Choose this, let it roll, see how you do.

Or same reboot, keep tapping F8, til you get into start up menu, choose safe mode,
when it boots up, do a system restore,

start,all programmes,accessories, system tools,
system restore, choose the date it offers you,
Let it roll,
Should be good, if no hardware problems

Downgrade from Vista Basic to XP Pro - Toshiba Portege M800

It depends a lot of the rest of your hardware acctually, audio card, video card, etc.
Download everest, that software will tell you what hardwre you exactly have, and then you can look for each driver.
To save time, first install windows xp, and then install everest to discover which drivers are missing, if you are lucky only 1 or 2

Toshiba Portege M400 to Vista

Here's a link for Toshiba's UK site. I looked around a bit and they don't seem to offer much in the way of drivers. You might try I've found it to be a good place to find those hard to find drivers, plus it's easier to use than most manufacturer's sites.
