Question about Dell Latitude D400 Notebook

After being turned on the screen goes black and the lock key with the number 9 is illuminated ablove the keyboard

The screen is black after the startup dell ad is flashed. The light up key with a closed padlock with the number 9 in it is illuminated. I don't know what that means. If you hold down the number 9 key for about 3 secs. it will start beeping with each keystroke. Same exact problem on my Latitude D400. I ran the diagnostics with F12. All systems pass OK. I do not have the utilities disk and no diagnostic partition. I plugged a regular CRT to the laptop and that does work. If I switch back to the LCD, it will work for a few seconds and then flicker out or turn a dark reddish hue and then flicker out. Could this just be a problem with the LCD itself or maybe the ribbon connector problem?

The lock key with the number 9 just means that the system has not completed booting.

I had that happen to me with my Dell as well... If you're comfortable with taking a laptop apart.. you'll need to detach the screen ribbon, clean it with rubbing alcohol, and then reattach it. This should do the trick..

Can't get past lock code

Laptop computers have the advantage being portable and self-contained, but among their drawbacks is a keyboard without a separate number keypad. While for most applications number keypads are unnecessary, they can be useful for data entry. Laptops sometimes provide a number keypad by giving certain keys double duty, allowing them to enter numbers rather than letters when a "Number Lock" setting is turned on. Number Lock, however, can get turned on accidentally, or enabled by an operating system by default, which can really mess up your typing. If typing "M" ends up displaying a "0" on your screen, Number Lock is probably the problem.

Try to locate the function key. On a T-series ThinkPad, it's in the lower left hand corner. It should be labeled "Fn," and the lettering may be blue, green or red instead of white. If your laptop lacks a "Fn" key, use the "Shift" key for Step 3 below instead. Locate the key labeled with "NmLk". On a T-series ThinkPad it shares a key with "ScrLk" which sits on the very top row between the "PrtSc" and "Pause" keys. On other IBM laptops, the "NmLk" key might share a key with "Delete." While holding down the "Fn" key or the "Shift" key, depending on your model, press the "NmLk" key. This should turn off Number Lock and restore your keyboard to its usual state. Number Lock on an IBM laptop is a "toggle" setting. You can turn Number Lock on by following the same steps.

What do the lighted icons stand for at the top of the keyboard? One looks like a locked padlock with a 9 in it. What does it mean?

That is your number lock key is turned on, which means that your 9 key keypad is ready to use. If you press the number lock key on your keyboard the light will go away but your 9 key numeric keyboard won't work until you press the number lock key again.

On my laptop a dell latitude d610 there is a lock on my keyboard thats lite up and has a number 9 on it what is it and how do i turn it off

Hi Welcome to FixYa!
That lock that has #9 on it is the NumLock (number lock) for your keyboard. You can switch if off by presssing the NumLk key just right above the F11 key..

Hope this could help!

My Inspiron 1525 comes on with the "9" lock(?) illuminated; it goes off while booting, and comes on. What is this "lock", is this "lock" important; what does it mean; and if I need to get it "unlocked",...

Ordinary "desktop" keyboards have a separate "keypad" (slash, star, minus, plus, enter, dot, and 0 through 9) in the same layout as a "traditional" adding-machine.

However, to keep the laptop's keyboard much smaller, those keys are superimposed on the right-hand side of the "standard" keyboard.

So, press "NUMeric LOCK" to use the "keypad" layout, and press it again to use the "standard" letters (I, O, P, K, L, M, et cetera) on the keyboard.

Mystery icon on Dell Keyboard Model SK 8115

The icon should mean the NUM LOCK is on. All that does is activate the numberpad on the right side of the keyboard. Chances are the monitor's backlight is bad. Try another monitor. You can also get a flashlight, turn it on and hold it very close to the face of the screen. Look closely at the screen, can you see your desktop or login screen? If so the backlight is not working with in the monitor.
