I had exactly the same problem with my OfficeJet 6110 as reported above (i.e. the scan head not knowing where the end-stop is). This is how to fix it (this method worked for me) 1) Lift up the scanner/copier hinged lid. Around the edge of the scan glass are 4 Torx screws. Undo all four screws. 2) Carefully prise the control panel faceplate off. The buttons underneath are on a single panel. Slide this to the left and lift off. 3) Jiggle the lid of the scanner to get it off the main body of the printer. 4) Locate the scan engine motor (top right corner) and remove the two motor retaining screws (one on the left of the motor, the other on the right). 5) Lift out the entire mechanism (rod, drive belt, scan head) and turn over. 6) Thoroughly clean all glass and mirrored areas of the scan head. Also clean the scan lamp on the top of the scan head. Clean the tray inside the scanner (where the scan head travels back and forth). Also clean the inside and outside of the scanner glass pane itself. 7) Refit all parts, using the technique described above, in reverse order. 8) Switch on printer. It should now work OK. Hope this helps, guys.

You are a genius!!! After dealing with this issue for more than a year, and the problem becoming more acute every time the printer was turned off and turned on again, I came across your post and followed it step-by-step. And now my printer works like new again! Thank you so much for taking the time and posting this!

I have Brother MFC 7820N printer. It has a loud clicking sound on the left rear end and paper will not feed, sometimes the first page will print and no paper message will be shown? Can you please help

It sounds like a displaced drive gear in the gear chain to the fuser. If you remove the covers and the fuser unit you should be able to manually turn the gears to check for jams or slips. Make sure all ther gears are correctly seated and no missing teeth.

Yesterday while I was printing on my HP Laserjet 4, it started making a loud clicking noise, and jammed. I opened the printer, looked at the gears on the right behind the toner cartridge and I can't see...

The clicking sound usually indicates a broken fixing coupler gear. The is the little gear on the top left side behind the fuser unit in the printer. You can replace it your self to save on a service call. The part number is RF5-0350 and it is available here:

Why is my samsung clp making a clicking noise?

Is the printer making a clicking sound when it is printing? Or is it just making a clicking sound but there are no light and the printer appears to be dead except making a clicking sound?

I know of a cause for either case.

Case 1. It is clicking when printing. Sometimes the toner cartridges are not seated properly in the imaging unit, and causes the gear on the cartridge to slip making a clicking sound as the gear is being turned. Try pulling out the cartridges and try turning the gear. It should turn smoothly without binding. If it binds, there is not much you can do about it except replace it when it goes empty. Reinsert the cartridge and check that it inserted completely into the imaging unit.

Case 2. Printer is dead, not printing except making a clicking sound. This is due to the power supply board failure. Usually the failure is due to a blown filter capacitor on the power supply board. The power supply is located on the right side of the printer. Remove the right side panel to get access to the board. The board can be either repaired or replaced. Hope this helps you.

Makes a sound like a plastic gear is stripped then shuts down.

The fuser hot roll gear and the small white drive gear have worn out. They will have to be replaced.

Printer is making a "clicking" sound when it prints

need to take the fuser out and look in the printer on the left side. There is a black gear that meshes with the fuser gear. That black gear is woreout. it's a common problem you have a tooth thats worn down on that gear.

While printing it will start to make a clicking noise and the paper will stop feeding through the printer

Sounds like its got broken gear teeth inside. Will need to take it to a printer repairer, be aware that you will get a quote to repair as its usualy c heaper to replace.

A loud clicking sound

This means that a gear is jammed or broken somewhere. Check for waste full and empty or drum waste roller and unblock the jammed toner inside that unit or check fuser gear if broken then replace it.

Loud clicking sound

We had the same problem, with a slightly different solution... it turned out in our case that the new toner cartridge's internal drum was too stiff, so the printer was trying to turn the toner spindle and failing, resulting in the clicking noise. Our solution was to manually turn the black center gear by hand a few times, and in doing so loosen the drum up a little, so that the printer could turn it. We put it back into the printer, and voila! No more clicking noise.
Thanks to whitehorse1 for his (or her) solution... though it wasn't the exact same problem for us, it was what put us on the right track. :)
