If You just installed Ubuntu and forgot what password you selected during the installation process or one of your friend gave you ubuntu computer without giving username and password. This tutorial will help you to recover username and password

1) Turn on your computer, and as soon as you the Press Esc to enter grub message, press the escape key.
2) Select the option that says (recovery mode).
3) Your PC will boot into a shell. Once you get a command prompt, type “passwd username” where the username is your username. If you can’t remember your username, then you can type “ls /home” which should bring it up.
4) Enter a new password when prompted, and again when prompted again Type “shutdown -r now” to reboot your system,
That’s it. You should now be able to login with your new password.

Usually what you do is you try to clear the CMOS Just flick the jumper/switch, or remove the whole battery and leave it out for some time before putting it in.The former approach is the preferable one. Make sure you leave it out for a long time, since some laptop CMOS batteries can hold the charge for hours. Make it a day, and it should clear.
If you can't do that...y not try installing Windows XP again...can u do that?

Lost my password on my 235dx hp notebook

Press CTRL ALT and DEL all together twice

THen it will bring up a login window

Put in the username : Administrator

Password is blank ( dont put anything there )

If it says account disabled then boot your computer in safe mode, Login as Administrator and then edit your account password from there.

Hi, Welcome to Fixya.

Did you try start the PC in safe mode & Administrator?
Restart your PC, press F8 , Select safe mode with networking prompt, Open the user Administrator, Go to control panel> Users> select the user > change password for it.

Let me know further.

Thanks for joining us.

Have a nice day.

Try hitting F5 on start up then safe mode. Boot to administrators account (not yours) hopefully its not password protected. set your password in control panel > users.

OR
download ophcrack and burn to disc then boot using that to find your password

I bought a toshiba laptop that is lock from the previous owner

If it's at bootup:

You need to temporarily remote the CMOS battery from the motherboard to reset the bootup password.

If it's at login:

LOCK LAPTOP IBM

try going into safe mode. Shut your computer off completely and then turn it back on, when you do start tapping f8 and then choose safe mode with networking. Once your system comes back up see if you can get into any user account. If you can press the start button and click the picture at the top beside your name to enter the user accounts screen, then press the home button, and click on the administrator. from here you can have the option to remove the passwords. If you cant get into any accounts in safe mode you will sadly have to do a recovery, which entails reinstalling windows.

My HP Compaq Presario V2000 says: this computer is in use and has been locked; only PC #.../Marie D (guest) or an administrator can unlock this computer. Links follow for user name and password. I don't...

Sorry, Marie, didn't quite get the whole problem. Try a reboot. If that doesn't work, try safe mode. You get to safe mode by rebooting, then when the Mfg splash screen comes up (ie HP/Compaq/Presario) hit F8 until you get the dos menu. The DOS menu is a black screen with about 8 options or so. Use your arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode. Again try to get the Administrator account open by choosing that account and then just hitting enter. If you get in, open the Control Panel, then the User Accounts. Then either change the logon procedure using options or remove the password from the user account you're having problems with. If you can't get this far, you probably have a virus and should submit your computer to a professional for backup and recovery of the hard drive.

Try imputing the password with the caps lock on. You may have had the caps lock on by mistake when you set the password and not have know it. You wouldn't be the first to have done that. I speak from EXPERIENCE on this one. If that doesn't work, try booting into safe mode and see if it will let you bybass the password and you can reset it to a new one there. Let me know ! Thanks //D
