Question about Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTI Digital Camera
The autofocus of my digital rebel xti (Canon, aka 400D) is giving me erratic results: the focus shifts swiftly a couple of times, then halts but not in focus, often even wildly out of focus. I use an Canon EFS 17 - 85 mm lens. The problem is least apparent on the widest angle (17 mm) and persistent on the narrowest angle (85 mm). Any clues as to what is causing this problem? Thanks! Are you using this indoors, in low light perhaps? This would be the most common reason for this happening. The only way to get around that is to use a "faster" lens, such as f2.8 / f1.8 / f1.4 etc.
If not, try cleaning the lens and camea contacts with a plastic eraser, make sure no debris falls in the camera body (hold upside down for this).
