Hi Elisa,
When you wind the winch to raise / lower the roof a serias of cables connected to each corner of the camper push the risers and 'slug' inside a tube on each corner of the van which push the corner posts.
If you wind the roof up or down while the van is not level, this can cause a cable to come off or even break as it travels over a pully - worse still break inside a corner tube.
If the break is external of the riser tube you may be able to repair, otherwise replacement of the cable inside the riser tube is a difficult job for the average DIY repairer.

Depends where it is broken but you can buy cable splicing kits that enable you to join two broken ends together , any good caravan supplier would stock them , hope this helps smirf617
