Clean the glass and ensure that it has not recently been taken from a cold area to warm humid area whereas condensation could have formed either on the inside of the glass or scanner mechanism.

Try cleaning the reading module with Isopropyl alcohol. Dont use any solvent. Gently press the scanning module to see if there is enough spring action.
If you are scanning, you should be able to set the resolution (DPI x DPI) in the scanner configuration. If it is blurry, it could be that the default scan resolution is lower (10 dpi or even 75 dpi). Settings location will depend on the scanner and software used.
Best scan at an equal (300 dpi) or even higher resolution, so you can scale the image afterwards without quality loss.
Make sure you have the emulsion (image) side of the slide towards the scanner sensor. Some scanners have a special setting for film still in slide holders to correct for focus. You may need a photo edit program to help with color and density. I find no difference from 35mm to split 5x7s altho bigger is always better.
Are you scanning both black and white and color the same way? The ADF (automatic document feeder) uses a different scanning area than when you place the document on the scanning glass. If you open the scanner cover, look to the left of the main scanner glass to the narrow strip used for the ADF. Make sure this narrow strip is clean -- no ink or white-out or scratches. This can make your copies look dirty or smudged.
We have also seen that Adobe Acrobat doesn't produce very clear scans (with a range of scanners). Adobe gives very good pdf file size but it downsamples images.
Don't set the scanning at any more than 300 DPI as the human eye cannot recognise any more than this.
Next try scanning in through a different peice of software, like Paint shop pro or Word and see if the results are the same.
Lastly uninstall the scanner driver and reinstall just to set aside a driver fault, as if the fault is still the same the scanner could be faulty.
