Question about Apple iPod nano 3rd Generation

1 Answer

My ipod was put under a pile of books and now it's frozen! Help!

When my friends press the switches hard ......... after that it is not working........can u give me a solution as soon as possible............. My friend set it down under a pile of books accidentally. It was locked and halfway charged, right in the middle of a song. I was just cleaning my room and found it. I took it out and it's frozen. I can't do anything with it, it won't play and when I switch off the lock it still shows as if it's locked on the screen. When I plug it in itunes doesn't register it and it's not turning off, it just looks as if I paused in the middle of a song. I'm worried that maybe the books smushed something in it or are pressing on something inside so I'm sort of trying to pry it looser but so far no help. If anyone has any ideas as to how I could fix it that would be greatly appreciated as the place I bought it is out of the country and it will be very hard to get another one. Thanks!

If you hold down the top and bottom buttons ( Think they are play / pause and the menu button down together ) for at least 5 seconds - obviously doing this when the lock slider switch is on the unlock position and it should do a hard reset and allow you to reset it.
If that does not help there are articles on the apple website which will walk you through how to reset it.
If you can do a hard reset via the menu and play / pause button ( holding them down for at least 5 to 10 seconds ) it should start to restart - when its restarting let go and it should request you to select a language and go from there.

The screen on my ipod is white, and no matter how many combinations of buttons i press, it does not want to change back. It seems as if it is frozen.

Welcome to Fixya

Looks like the software just hanged-up on you. Try to reset the Ipod by following the procedures below.

1st option:
Turn the Hold switch on, then back to off.
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for 10 seconds (until the Apple logo appears).
You may need to repeat the reset several times.
If the reset doesn't help, then put the iPod into forced disk mode.

2nd option (Disk Mode):
Plug the iPod into a high-powered USB port, let it sit for 2 hours, then disconnect it. If you have a wall charger, plug in the iPod, then follow these steps while it is still plugged in.
Turn the Hold switch on, then back to off.
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears
Immediately switch your figures to press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until "Disk Mode" appears at the top.
For a lot of people, this solves the problem. Connect the iPod to the computer and (assuming it shows up) reset the iPod again to get it out of Disk Mode. If at this point you still have the white screen, restore the iPod using the restore function in iTunes under the Summary tab (this will erase everything on the iPod and put it at factory settings).
Note: Do not disconnect or eject the iPod until the store is totally done. After you think it's done, wait another five minutes.

Thank you for using Fixya!

Frozen ipod

Hey i scored you these instructions on how to reset your frozen ipod. Hope its hella useful. Good luck :)

Last Modified: January 28, 2009 Article: HT1320 Old Article: 61705 Summary Learn how to reset or restart iPod following a freeze.

Important: If your iPod is frozen or won't turn on, it may be because iPod is paused or the Hold switch is in the locked position. If so, a lock symbol appears on the screen. Slide the Hold switch to the unlocked position and check the screen.
If the iPod is connected to a computer and displays any of the following messages you should eject the iPod from within iTunes instead of resetting it:
Connected. Eject before disconnecting Sync in Progress. Please wait... Do not disconnect If your iPod is frozen or won't turn on, the steps to reset it vary by model. You can easily tell which iPod model you have if you're not sure.

Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.) Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step. Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.

If you are still unable to reset your iPod, use only one finger from one hand to press the Center (Select) button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Menu button.
When you reset iPod all your music and files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost. Date and time are preserved (unless the iPod reset itself because it had no power and then was reconnected to power). Other customized settings, such as Bookmarks, On-The-Go Playlists, Shuffle, Backlight timer, and so forth are preserved from the last time the hard drive turned on.

Frozen Screen I have a frozen screen which says "Disk Mode", then there is a large "tick" in the centre of the screen, and another message saying "OK to disconnect". Nothing I try unfreezes this - I have...

I do not know which ipod you have, but here are instructions on how to get a nano in and out of DISK MODE:

To turn iPod Disk mode off:
  1. Toggle the hold switch on and off
  2. Press and Hold the Select and the Menu button for more than ten seconds
  3. The normal selection screen should appear, your iPod is out of Disk mode.
To turn iPod Disk mode on:
  1. Toggle the hold switch on and off
  2. Press and Hold the Select and the Menu button for six+ seconds
  3. Release both buttons when the Apple logo appears
  4. Press and Hold the Select and Play button until the Disk Mode text appears.
If it does not work, you may need to reset your ipod. The following link has extensive instructions on that procedure for many types of ipods.
Good luck my friend!

Ipod nano 8GB 3rd generation FROZEN!

hi,

Firstly, don't worry about your ipod, i had the exact same problem with mine and with 3 of my friends here in athens!

Just leave it frozen untill it drains out of battery,
then try plugging it on your pc and leave it plugged for a while,
after doing that try to open it.

NOTE: my ipod opened after this step and worked properly.

If the ipod still don't works you can do the same as my sister did.
Take the ipod to your sales man and get a software update or replace it (if you are still in guarantee period)

Hope i helped,
Looking forward to hearing from you for further assistance!
