Zoom H4 does not power up on battery power.

My Zoom H4 will no longer run with batteries. If I use AC adaptor it works fine but I get nothing on battery power.

Probably two years too late, but I recently got a used H4 and it was having this same issue. Upon reading the documentation, it seemed as though it required a specific type of AA batteries. If you update the firmware (mine was 1.3) to the latest version (currently 2.4), you can toggle the battery type under the menu (most likely alkaline is what you want). It also added lots of other great features!

The switch like contact that connect the battery when the adapter isremoved has been bent. Best to replace the power input jack with identical one. They are weak and it is a common problem for this type jack.

I have the same problem with my Zoom H4. I don't think anything is bent, as I have never even used the unit.

It works fine when it has power from the AC Adapter, but it will not work or even turn on when I try to run it off batteries.

I carefully inspected the AC power connection area and I can not see anything wrong with it.

I think this might be a common problem with these units.

1. Put high quality batteries in, fully charged.
2. Push down firmly on battery lid.
3. Turn power on.

If you hold down on the battery lid tight enough, it should power up. This worked for me, now I just have to find a way to keep the battery lid closed tight without holding it! Any suggestions?

Good luck All!

Not a solution but shared problem and another idea. I did use it with both battery and mains, but then found it would not power up. Don't quite understand the link between the power jack and the battery compartment? despite v careful use.. not bashing round in the filed, the click top looks a little tiny bit loose.. one computer shop thought it may not be holding the battery spring down hard enough now.. but no solution cos can't get in there..any ideas?.

I re-soldered the contacts of the external power jack to the circuit board with a fine tip soldering iron and used deoxit on the contacts in the power jack and that got mine going again...and I installed the latest firmware...

Mine is about 3 years old and sometimes used in a humid environment. It wont power up at all today, after a week of heavy rains. It did the same a year ago for a while and i got it going again by repeatedly switching the on-off switch. after that it wouldn't run on batteries. Then one time when I hooked up external mics with phantom power, the mic inputs stopped working, though the onboard mics continued to work fine. I pulled it apart a few months ago and there was a lot of internal corrosion, cleaned most of this out, couldn't get to all, then it worked again on batteries for about 3 weeks and stopped again. I believe corrosion due to humidity has caused all these problems. I am going to get another one because they are such a good recorder, will be paying special attention to keeping it dry.

SOURCE: My Zoom H4 will no longer run with batteries.

Probably the connector where you plug the AC adapter into has a switch contact that disconnects the battery when external adapter is used and it has gotten bent so when the adapter is not plugged in, it no longer makes contact to the battery power. This is pretty common for devices that use both battery and adapters.

Take it apart and check that all the boards are plugged into each other. Simple to do, and great design, but vibration can pull them apart. Also, check that the battery connectors are not oxidized...

Amp turns on but puts out no sound except for faint noise which dies out after a few seconds.

It sounds like a defective/incorrect AC-to-DC adapter may have caused your problem. These adapter come with different output voltages, AC or DC output and different amperage ratings. AC-to-DC adapters list the polarity of the DC voltage as it relates to the DC power plug and you must match both the devices voltage and power requirements. As for the amp...not working on batteries either, I would suspect output transistors or IC.

How to perform a factory reset on zoom H4

Hello ! Actually what you do is download the latest firmware from the ZOOM page. Find HANDY H4 (you can Google that) and go to the Download tab. Follow all instructions. Be sure to have new batteries or be plugged in to AC while you reset. I've done it on my H4(I have 2) and H4n and it worked fine. Be patient, it takes a while once you start. Good luck !!

Usually the problem will be with the battery contacts. Often corrosion due to leaving batteries in too long or the spring contacts, don't. Another harder thing is the adapter connector often has a spring blade that contacts the center pin when adapter is unplugged to switch to battery. These get bent and are a chronic problem for devices that use either adapter or battery.

Make sure the batteries are good... some people try to use re-chargeable batteries and because of their lower voltage they cause problems. First thing is to try new batteries.

My Zoom H4 only works with batteries sometimes

Yes, corrosion is most likely the problem, you may also check the power cord for the correct voltage. If you are savy enough you can take it apart and clean the connections and run it from a power supply. I hope this helps, good luck..
