Question about Zoom H4 Handy Recorder
My Zoom H4 will no longer run with batteries. If I use AC adaptor it works fine but I get nothing on battery power.
Probably two years too late, but I recently got a used H4 and it was having this same issue. Upon reading the documentation, it seemed as though it required a specific type of AA batteries. If you update the firmware (mine was 1.3) to the latest version (currently 2.4), you can toggle the battery type under the menu (most likely alkaline is what you want). It also added lots of other great features!

The switch like contact that connect the battery when the adapter isremoved has been bent. Best to replace the power input jack with identical one. They are weak and it is a common problem for this type jack.

I have the same problem with my Zoom H4. I don't think anything is bent, as I have never even used the unit.
It works fine when it has power from the AC Adapter, but it will not work or even turn on when I try to run it off batteries.
I carefully inspected the AC power connection area and I can not see anything wrong with it.
I think this might be a common problem with these units.

1. Put high quality batteries in, fully charged.
2. Push down firmly on battery lid.
3. Turn power on.
If you hold down on the battery lid tight enough, it should power up. This worked for me, now I just have to find a way to keep the battery lid closed tight without holding it! Any suggestions?
Good luck All!

Not a solution but shared problem and another idea. I did use it with both battery and mains, but then found it would not power up. Don't quite understand the link between the power jack and the battery compartment? despite v careful use.. not bashing round in the filed, the click top looks a little tiny bit loose.. one computer shop thought it may not be holding the battery spring down hard enough now.. but no solution cos can't get in there..any ideas?.

Probably the connector where you plug the AC adapter into has a switch contact that disconnects the battery when external adapter is used and it has gotten bent so when the adapter is not plugged in, it no longer makes contact to the battery power. This is pretty common for devices that use both battery and adapters.

Take it apart and check that all the boards are plugged into each other. Simple to do, and great design, but vibration can pull them apart. Also, check that the battery connectors are not oxidized...
