Question about Kohler CH25 PA-CH730-0040 Command Gasoline Engine

Kohler small engine problem

I have a 1996 Kohler Command 15 hp in a John Deere lawn tractor. It starts fine but if throttle is placed lower than full it dies. Or at full throttle, blades engaged, engine dies. If left at full throttle after a minute or two engine dies, but if choke is placed on, engine will continue running for another minute then dies. Will not hot restart, but 15 minutes later will start up fine. Had a similar problem 10 years ago and it was a bad ignition module. Or is this some kind of idle speed/choke problem? Thanks.

You should have a shop check for a blown head gasket. Have them do a compression test and then a leak-down test to confirm this.

ADJUST THE GOVENOR ON MY LT 155 John Deere lawn tractor

This should be Kawasaki engine; although, it could a Kohler. The IPL on this doesn't specify which engine it has. It would nice if it did where I could look the engine's service manual but the following should be what you need.

You place throttle in full throttle position. You need to watch the linkage at the governor shaft for which it turns as you go to full throttle then you would continue turning the governor shaft in that direction until it stops. From there you tighten the retaining bolt or nut and you should be good to go.

I have a 214 kohler engine john deere lawn tractor, what point wires go to hot and the ground

if that is the Kohler 14 hp motor it may have the spark control untit on the motor cover. I recently ran into one like that and switched the coil out from a blown 20 hp kohler engine. I just taped up the excess wires and made sure they were not near any moving parts. The mower ran fine after that. Kohler wants about $160.00 for a spark control unit. There have been no repercussions since making the switch.

I have a john deere 285 lawn tractor that smokes and cuts out at high throttle. It will idle though. The fuel pump will squirt accross the garage so its fine. I have taken the carberator off and...

It sounds like it is too rich in fuel at full throttle.
Try removing the air filter and running the engine.
What happens?
Ensure that the choke is fully open.

Only idle

Take that carburetor apart and soak in carburetor cleaner and run a small wire down each passage and blow out the passages with compressed air.

While mowing, my john deere 15 hp mower started running ar full throttle as if the governer was stuck. does this 15 hp engine have an external governer or is it built into the engine?

My JD with 15 hp Kohler did the same thing.

You will need to pull the air filter housing off the carb. then remove the two nuts holding the carb to the engine. Disconnect the Gov. and trottle linkage (little tricky, but you can do it.)

Once you have the carb off the motor I'm pretty confident you will find the inside brass circular door (the one on the outside is the choke) has lost a screw and does not pivot correctly. You need to secure the baffle door to the pivot, replace all parts and she will no longer race.
