    Clean all lube or contaminants from shaft and flywheel, tighten flywheel nut to engine mfr. specification with a torque wrench. Adjust valves and once running adjust carb.

When you replace the flywheel key
the flywheel should be re torqued to 30 ft lbs
be sure all attatching areas are clean-no oil
check keyways to be sure they are in good shape flywheel and crankshaft

My husband was mowing with an Exmark Quest riding mower and ran over an extension cord. It stalled and won't start again.

The flywheel is locked to the crankshaft with a aluminium key. If the engine is abruptly stopped this soft aluminium key will shear off and let the flywheel turn.The shaft quits turning and the flywheel don't. This is to avoid breaking the crankshaft. When the flywheel turns or spins on the crankshaft it puts the spark timing out of time and will not run, it might backfire or spin and stop or just spin over.

If you aare sure the securing nut is tight, then it has to be a problem with the taper on the crank, it is the taper on the crank that holds the flywheel, the key is just to align the ignition timimg.

Sounds like a sheer flywheel key. Common on the SRC 621. Kawasaki motor, correct. The flywheel key is under the recoil. Pull the flywheel and check the key. A very small key is there. Breaks and puts the engine out of time

How to set the timiing briggs stratton 675 series


The timing on a lawnmower engine is controlled by the positioning of the flywheel on the crankshaft. There is a key (square metal pin) holding the flywheel at a predetermined location on the crankshaft. If the engine is out of time, the flywheel has slipped on the crankshaft (hitting a rock, brick or anything else solid with the blade will cause this.

The solution:

1. Disconnect the spark plug wire.
2. Remove the motor upper housing (usually a 3/8 or 7/16 bolt).
3. Remove the bolt at the center of the flywheel (use an impact wrench if you have one... or wedge a large screwdriver against one of the cooling fins and the magnet boss, not between two fins or you may break a fin.
4. Use a wheel puller to remove the flywheel.
5. Remove the square key that is between the flywheel and the crankshaft, (you'll notice that the key is damaged and will need to be replaced. Home Depot or Lowe's or any lawnmower repair shop should have a new key.
5. Install the new key in the slot on the crankshaft.
6. Reinstall the flywheel. (if the magnets are rusty, now would be a good time to gently sand the rust off of them, but do not mess with the magnetic pickup as the gap distance between the pickup and the flywheel is crucial)
7. Reinstall the top cowling.
Your mower should be ready.

Runs rough and kicks back when pull starting

The timing may be off. Has this mower ever hit anything while running. There is a small aluminum key that keeps the engine in time (flywheel to magneto) and it breaks if the mower blade hits an immovable object (rock, tree stump, meteorite etc.) The timing will be skewed and symptoms like yours will result.You can check the flywheel key by removing the cover on top of the mower and the starter/recoil unit.The key is in a slot on the top side of the crankshaft and fits a notch inside the flywheel. Look carefully. If it is sheared, the notch in the flywheel will NOT be lined up with the notch in the crankshaft and a new key will need to be installed after removing the broken one.

My son hit a log with my js25 walk behind mower now it won't run.

He more than likely sheered the key in the crankshaft. When the key bends or breaks it throws the timing off and the engine will not start. The key is there to prevent damage to the crankshaft when you hit an object. You will need to remove the engine cover and then use a puller to remove the flywheel. Where the flywheel connects to the crankshaft you will see the key which is either broken or bent. All you do is buy a new one and replace it.

I have replaced complete clutch system minus the flywheel... worked great for 1 day and now cant get it to disengage completly... good pressure on pedal, throw-out is moving... 1993 chevy k2500 4x4 reg...

I am going to assume that you checked all your linkage to insure all is well. So now I am going to take a stab in the dark and GUESS that when you relaced the disk and pressure plate you must have inadvertently installed the disk backwards. This would have positioned the springs against the flywheel still allowing enough disk, flywheel, and pressure plate contact to function for a short period of time.

Mower wont start

You will need to replace an aluminum "key" in the flywheel. Whenever you hit something, the key is designed to shear so you don't break something major.
