Toshiba A200 Notebook Computer Screen Black Out

Hello,

I have a Toshiba A200 Notebook Computer. The screen suddenly blacks out. However I can still see images (like shades) on the LCD screen. I can even login to the computer. I think the LCD is still working. It's just the background light panel (white light) not working.

Can anyone tell me how difficult it is to fix this myself? What parts do I need?

Thanks,
Katherine

Thanks for the prompt response. It was really helpful.

    I have 2 final questions:

    1) If I have to order the parts and fix it myself, how would I be able to determine if it has a bad high voltage power supply (I guess also known as Power Inverter) or a bad light tube? Or should I order and replace both parts?

    2) From your experience, how difficult it is to replace these 2 parts? I am a fairly technical and hands-on person. I always work on radio control systems, electronics and can do some simple soldering work if needed. Do you think I can replace these 2 parts myself?

Once again, thanks for your time and help.

LCD monitor work based on backlight illumination, they have a fluorescent tube of high intensity usually located at the bottom ot top of the monitor sometimes they may even have two of these one on each side or on top and on the bottom of the screen, this tubes illuminate the screen from the side into the LCD device. The lights are powered by a high voltage switching power supply. A number of things may happen that can cause the symptons you are experiencing. You may have a bad high voltage power supply (locvated inside the laptop body or sometimes depending on the model inside the actual LCD lid.), you may also have a bad light tube or a bad flat cable that connects from the power supply to the LCD lid. Usually is not worth to pay for a repait like this as it is time consuming to dissasemble the whoel laptop to fix or replace any of the components involved in this. If you want a fast and cheaper solution, get a cheap LCD monitor and conenct it to the external RGB port of yoru laptop if you want to keep using it. Otherwise look for replacement parts online for the light tube, power supply assembly and cabling then get somebody to replace them for you.

If I were youo I would purchase both parts, the actual light and the inverter.
As far as complexity, it is no easy but given what you usay about yourself I think you may be able to pull it off, the hardest part usually is figure out how to open and dissasemble the laptop without breaking it specially the lid part that holds the LCD panel, this can be tricky but definetly doable with patience and being careful as the two most important facors of the operation.

Black screen

Hold the Fn key (between the control and alt on both the Toshibas I have here) and press F5. This changes the default screen output between the laptop screen, and external monitor and both. You may have to press it a couple of times to get what you want.

Hello, When i turn my computer on the screen clearly turns on however there is nothing on it. It is just black but that sort of off black that is lit up. It makes some sounds as if it is doing something...

Hello !

Connect an external monitor and if it works, your problem is the display's backlight or inverter board.

If you were experiencing discoloration in the screen (pinkish lower light hues) before it failed, that would indicate a CCFL backlight issue. If the screen suddenly went dim on you rather than a slow degradation the inverter would be indicated.

In either case, a technician in your area should be able to help. Evaluate to see if the repair is cost-effective.

Hope this helps.

My toshiba A200 screen occasionally turns black and music also stops. When i try manually restarting my laptop, sometimes it works but most of the time it doesnt boot at all. Sometimes it doesnt even go...

This sounds like a hard drive is, or has failed. Either that or the RAM (memory has gone bad)
Did you let the laptop overheat? Was it left on for a long time? Or is this just an old machine ?
I would replace the hard drive, and reload the operating system, that is if you really want to keep the laptop. If that solves it great! Also, did you notice if there are any "beep" noises, or error messages when it acts up? Often times, you can go on the internet and find out what the messages mean.
