Question about Gateway Solo 9500 Notebook

2 Answers

Problem booting I bought my two sons gateway 9500 laptops. One of them has developed a problem booting up. It frequently stops, beeps two short beeps and sits there. Sometimes it boots normally. Sometimes it runs for a while, then gives an error message that the video adaptor is not working properly and shuts down the high quality video, leaving only the vga screen. I've swapped the ram and power supply from the other laptop, I've removed the hard drive, dvd rom, ethernet card and floppy. No difference. When it refuses to boot, there is nothing on the screen, but, the fan runs and the lights on the panel are working, up to the double beep. It has Phoenix BIOS and everything that I can find says that the error beeps are supposed to be in groups of three. What does two beeps mean?

What is the oBo and how do I identify the north bridge? I tried it with one ram stick at a time and that didn't help. I might be able to get a junker off ebay and pull parts off it.

Yes, I tried both slots so it must be the ram controller. I had hoped there would be a simple fix, since I've already had two Gateway laptops fail in the last three months.

Hi,

Any beep code from pheonix starting with two beeps relates to ram issues. If you have treid swapping the ram and it only gives the first 2 beeps then most likely the RAM controller on the north bridge or the data channels themselves are damaged on the motherboard.

You can try running a single chip of ram in each slot at seperate attempts. If it is a data channel damaged this will bypass the problem although it will cripple the laptops performance. Either way, the only permanent and proper fix would be to replace the oBo which I doubt would be cost effective on this unit.

    Sorry,

I meant MoBo(motherboard), bit of a typo there. Have you tried running with only one stick of RAM in one slot or the other, if it's just damaged data channels that may resolve the issue. If it doesn't then you will likely have a failed MoBo and must find one used or order it from gateway if it's still available.

Gateway wont startup. One beep followed by two short

I would suspect the power supply or a power connection. The only other issue might be a motherboard, which is a bit more involved. Try another power supply if you have one around.

12 short beeps and it wont stop rebooting

I'm not sure what 12 short beeps mean, but it indicates something is wrong with the hardware. Check your ram sticks. Found under a panel on the bottom of your laptop. If you have 2, take one out, try to boot, then swap them.

There are other reasons for beep codes, but they tend to be much worse & less likely.

Shortly after I turn my computer it turns off

How long is shortly? If it runs and brings up the Windows Desktop and you are allowed to work for 10 minutes or longer then it shuts down, most likely the laptop is overheating. One way to tell if it is overheating is to immediately try to turn it back on after it shuts off. If it will not boot back up, it's overheating. If you let it sit and cool off for a while, then try to boot it back up and it does it successfully, it's overheating.Causes of Overheating:1) Dust all inside the computer. Fans clogged with dust, dust around the vents.2) Fan not working3) The Thermal Past around the CPU has dried up or is too thin the keep the unit cool. When you plug in the power cord is there any lightswhatsoever on the laptop, where the plug goes in or on the AC Adapter of thepower cord?

When you press the power button do you hear fans running, hard drive spinning, lights on the computer, hear any beeps or lights constantly blinking, hear theDvD/CD drive click and the light on the drawer of the DvD/CD turn on for asecond or two? If so the laptop is trying to boot or may have booted, butthe screen is not showing for some reason.

Beep tones and blinking lights tells the technicians what is going on with thelaptop and why it is not booting. Most times it's a motherboard issuewhen you hear beeps or blinking lights continuous.

Gateway lx6200 power issues

Disconnect all hard drives or optical drives to see if it does the same thing. If it comes up begging for a system drive, your system hard drive probably has a corrupted boot sector that is redirecting to a restart instead of proceeding with startup. It wouldn't surprise me if it's also infected with a virus or a bunch of them.

Blank screen

Try plugging the laptop into an external monitor to make sure the laptop is booting up properly. If it is unplug the monitor from the laptop; or if you know the laptop boots up fine and you get the windows audio when it boots and the initial starting beeps then forget the monitor. Shine a torch or light source on the screen and if you see a faint picture then the inverter on the screen has developed a fault.

Gateway Laptop overheated and stopped working.

Usually when the laptop overheats the CPU shuts down, and after it cools down you may be able to power it up again, unless the CPU has failed.
If you are able to get the laptop working, get the fan replaced, if it laptop doesn't boot up then there is a serious problem (most likely a costly one).
