Question about Gateway MX3701 PC Notebook

When installing windows 7 dvd isn't recognized at reboot

My laptop is Gateway model mx3701 windows xp media center, when I attempt to install windows 7 the dvd is not reconized. I downloaded and unzipped the setup more than once and burned 3 different DVDs with nero believing perhaps that would help, without success. Instead of presenting the installation options after rebooting before xp loads, it opens on the desktop after windows xp has started.

Do I need to have BIOS options to be changed to something other than the default settings for the Setup to begin at rebooting, or is there something more I need to do?

Thanks, :) I'll appreciate helpful suggestions very much!

In bios you need to change the boot sequence making your DVD drive 1st on the list. Once you do this save & exit. Then put the setup dvd in & reboot. Good luck & hope this helps you out.

Have you ever booted in win7? It may be a win 7 issue not a memory issue. Does it boot with the 2 512 MBs of memory. unplug, remove battery, install the 512 MBs memory, reboot.

My LG X200 works with Windows 7. Can I install XP on this model. And if I install XP, the drivers available for windows 7 will work on XP?

The drivers for Wndows 7 most likely will not work on Windows XP.
If this laptop came installed with Windows 7 it may not have Windows XP drivers.
Before you install Windows XP check the LG WEB site for Windows XP drivers for your model laptop. If there isn't any XP drivers then I suggest you stick with Windows 7.

Restore point will not work, and none of the software programs I have will recognize the DVD drive, so i can burn a DVD. They only recognize the Cd drive.

Have you made any recent hardware changes to your PC?

First check device manager by right clicking on My Computer and then properties. If using Vista or Windows 7 device manager should appear on the left side. If in XP or earlier click the hardware tab and then device manager. Find your dvd drive in the listing and make sure there are no errors present for the device. Go to the devices manufacturers website and download the lastest drivers. Install and reboot.

If the device does not appear in device manager and installing drivers did not fix it, the device may have become unplugged or may not be installed properly.

When i put my hdd into my dell laptop and try to but it it is saying BOOTMGR is missing! thanks...

It's a windows problem.
The problem isn’t hardware related, you can fix it with relative ease as long as you have a Windows Vista DVD handy or a( windows xp).
Steps:
  1. Boot off the Windows Vista DVD and then click Next at the first prompt:
  2. You should see a link in the lower left-hand side for “Repair your computer”
  3. The installation process will attempt to find your Vista installation directory. If there’s more than one in the list, select the correct one and then use the Next button again.
  4. Click the first link for “Startup Repair”
  5. The installation process will repair the system, and then prompt for you to reboot.
  6. Alternatively you could have chosen the Command Prompt option instead, and use the following command to fix the boot options only:
    bootrec /fixboot
At this point you should be able to reboot your computer, remove the DVD and everything should be working.

For windows xpFollow the step below:
  1. Boot the pc with windows xp installation cd.
  2. At the start up screen press enter
  3. Windows will detect previous version of windows installed and will prompt you accordingly.
  4. You press r for repairs then wait untill finish and reboot.
You can also do repair via recovery console by pressing r at the start-up screen.
Type the following command
CHKDSK /R/F
You can also type" fixmbr" and "fixboot"
try this..........
