I bought a Philips HDMI cable and went to hook it up. My LG plasma recognized the hook up right away. My player won't even let me select HDMI as an output option. Any ideas? I have the same problem with an LCD LG tv. It supports full HD, but does not let me choose HDMI. I have an official cable. I exchanged it and the new player has exactly the same problem.

- Updated firmware, and same thing. Blanked/greyed out.Won't let me choose HDMI as an option. It possibly does not recognize either cable or tv. Jun 02, 2009
- Okay, thanks. The cable is used for a digital tv receiver normally and works perfectly fine, full HD, so I doubt it's the cable. But so weird. The TV setting is simply set at the standard HDMI, so the problem is definitely that it won't recognize the cable. I will try a new cable. Jun 02, 2009
- New, it's just because I mess up the terms. When choosing input, there is only one option of HDMI (Whereas there are three different AV options which currently set, most annoyning).
So, to sum up. Two different players with the same problem. Won't recognize the HDMI cable. What I don't know is that if I have a cable that will work but isn't connected to a TV, that I will be able to choose the HDMI option through the blu ray player. What I am curious about is whether or not it is the cable, the HDMI out on the blue ray player or the HDMI in on the TV (or some other weird problem). Jun 02, 2009
- Nope just the one HDMI connector.
I just bought an official sony HMDI cable and this does not work either.
Could it be that the TV does not work with the blu-ray? My TV digital selector works fine. Jun 02, 2009
- I contacted Sony, but they stated that I should just buy another cable and it would work: It didn't. It only set me back another 40 bucks. So bottomline is that I must test it on another TV and see if by some weird reason, it doesn't work with my 32" LG LCD. Jun 02, 2009
- Thanks for replies!
However, I can honestly say that all of the above is not the error. My TV is running 1080 component right now. Also, before it is possible to change the signal from the blu ray to 720p or 1080i it needs to be able to actually choose HDMI as an output, which I cannot do.
I will have it checked on another tv. I think it is an error/fault that Sony has no clue exists. Probably in combaitility with the TV or possibly with both of the tested blu ray players.
If so, damn that is not poor product testing on this blu ray player.
Also, I have used to different cables, one being an official expensive as hell PS3 cable. So cables are not at fault. The only option left is that my TV does not communicate with the player or the port out HDMI.
Lastly, there is supposed to be a light in the front panel showing if an HDMI cable is inserted and detected and if it is sending a high definition signal (digital). So the TV is definitely not set on the wrong channel.
But thanks again. Will have an answer tomorrow. If it works on another TV then it is definitely my TV/blu ray which are incompatible. But that is just messed up. Jun 03, 2009
- Bluray player works on other TV, and hence it is my TV. I spoke to LG about it and they say that the model has the same problem with PS3. But neither LG or Sony wants to step up to the fact that these two don't connect, which means that my Bluray player will not play with HDMI. Since there is nothing technically wrong with the player, the store won't take it back.
So, I've spent about 380 dollar and getting something which looks slightly better than DVD. I am really annoyed with this. There should be a notice that this player will not play HDMI with this and this model, and if there isn't, then Sony must simply take the player back and issue said statement
