Frigidaire microwave making noise and blue sparks

We have the same problem with the same microwave! From day one, brand new microwave and it sparks a blue light behind the wave guide cover and makes a noise like a bug zapper. What is the deal? Is this a bad microwave? It does it regardless of what we are cooking, but it sometimes stops for a little while and then starts back. Should we get rid of it?

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck somewhere in the cavity of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

They are often held in place by a plastic rivet.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced. It provides important protection for the magnetron.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

Was boiling water and running microwave and a popping sound and blue spark appeared, it still seams to be functioning normally but am worried about what happened???

if you mean you were boiling water in a microwave, then A) that is a dangerous thing to do as any liquid in a microwave is very volatile and B) were the dishes ,containers etc you had in the microwave free of all metal? as that is what would have made the blue spark , when the microwaves connect with metal

Hello bruton. As a microwave oven ages, the interior paint often deteriorates as does the internal part that creates the micro waves.

Using this is not a good idea as there is now a fire hazard. The best solution is to replace the microwave. There are sales now and you can get a nice new one for under $100.

Plmv169dcc WILL NOT HEAT. dOESN'T MAKE NOISE. ALL ELSE WORKS

the unit inside the microwave that heats food, called the "magnetron" has gone bad or the circuits that power the magnetron have failed. if its under warranty still, send it back to the manufacturer. if not you can call some repair shops and see how much it would be to service it, but its most likely going to be cheaper to purchace a new microwave since they are relatively cheap these days

To allow us to help you effectively (at no charge), please post a NEW problem to FixYa, and please include your brand name and the full model number from the tag in or on the unit, and very detailed symptoms, answering these questions:

- Is it dead? (meaning there is no display, no light when you open the door, and no beeps when you press a key)

- Does it run but no heat? (meaning the inside light, cooling fan, and turntable all work)

- Does it make any unusual noise?

- Is it louder or quieter than normal?

When I turn it on it makes a noise like it's sparking but it's not. There is a piece of cadboard on the inside right that is all burned what can I do.

Any burned material must be removed as it is CONDUCTIVE and will absorb further energy from the microwave.

Never run the microwave without adequate food/water/etc as that can cause arcing.

Popping and shooting sparks

Hi There!
Check behind the "Wave Guide Cover" on the inside cavity. There may be moisture or food residue behind it. Should be a cover that is plastic or Mica. Really strange that it's sparking being new. Also check that you use plates without gold or silver trimmings (Crockery or porcelein). This will also cause sparking. Remember that microwaves will always go to the first organic source in its path. The wave guide cover, if soiled, is very close to the tip of the Magnetron and will therefor result in arcing. Good Luck, JUS004

I am having the exact same problem. There was a large POP and now it makes a weird noise and doesn't heat. Everything else appears to work though. I think it may be the HV Capacitor. Before I tear this thing off the wall and check the Capacitor does this sound like it may be the problem?
