Go to There you will find several very good and free virus and spyware removal tools. I personally recommened spybot search and destroy. Lavasofts, Ad-Aware and AVG's Anti-Virus Free. They are all freeware you can download there at no cost and run them first to try and eliminate the viruses on your machine.

You should have someone download any of the above products or all of them, If you don't have a really good working knowledge of what's going on though probably not clamwin I use it too but you can do some real damage. Have them download tham and put them on a disc for you load and run them. Have you tried starting in 'safe mode' if not try this:

To use a Safe Boot option, follow these steps:

    1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
    2. Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
    3. When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.

    Description of Safe Boot options

    loadTOCNode(2, 'moreinformation');

    • Safe Mode (SAFEBOOT_OPTION=Minimal): This option uses a minimal set of device drivers and services to start Windows.
    • Safe Mode with Networking (SAFEBOOT_OPTION=Network): This option uses a minimal set of device drivers and services to start Windows together with the drivers that you must have to load networking.
    • use safemode with networking you may be able to get the software yourself. If that doesn't work try safe mode and get someone to make you that disc.
    • The reality if your infected bad, viruses can imbed in your BIOS and then nothing short of removing the bad drive chucking it flashing your BIOS and then a complete restore will guarantee removal. That's why you really try and fix it first!

Here are some recommendations for free software that will get rid of the virus and/or adware that is affecting your computer. I personally recommend these packages. Download at least Avast or AVG. If you decide on Clamwin, also download an anti-spyware tool. It is a good idea to download all of the anti-spyware tools because sometimes one catches something that the others will not.

Free antivirus tools:
Avast! Antivirus (recommended). Free. Works. Doesn’t trash your system resources. Includes an anti-spyware kit.

Clamwin (what I use). Free. Works. Uses no resources. Does not work automatically. Advanced users/risk takers only.

Grisoft AVG (what I used to use). Free. Works. Gets slightly more annoying with each version, but is still a favorite of many. Includes an anti-spyware module. Works great.

Free Anti-Spyware Tools:
It’s best to have ALL of them and run them periodically. The first time your run them, you need to run them multiple times until each one shows no more threats:

Lavasoft AdAware. Get this. Use it. Repeat every month or so

Spy-Bot Search and Destroy. Get this one, too. Use it. Repeat every month or so.

Javacool SpywareBlaster. Not tested. Offers real-time protection. Uses system resources.

· To reduce spyware, use an alternative browser like Firefox, Google Chrome, or Opera
· To reduce virus attacks, buy a router, which acts as a better firewall than any software can. It allows you to share your Internet connection as well.

Hello, I am sorting out my friends Inspiron Mini (XP) which was riddled with viruses. Having cleared the viruses the laptop crashes every time you start it. There are no CDs with it either, and the...

Have you changed the hard drive on this sytem at any time? It appears your OS is defective and may need a complete reinstall. You can reset it to factory settings by clicking on F8 at bootup and select the 'repair my computer' option. If you havent changed the HDD yet, you should see the Dell Datasafe option (last option). Select that and proceed.
If you changed the HDD, then the above option would not work. You will need to call Dell and get an OS CD to reinstall the operating system. Obviously, if you are out of warranty, you'd have to buy a new CD..
Try running a PSA diagnostic on the system to see if there is an issue with the HDD. To do this, hold down the Fn key and power on the system. Once you see the Pre-Boot Assessment screen, release the Fn key. Let the diags run - approximately 10-15 minutes, and make a note of any error messages. Errors like 0142, 0146, etc would indicate a HDD problem and would need a HDD replacement. (HDD = Hard Disk Drive)

I want a driver checker to check my driver and

You could try looking for driver downloads from here

Just keep in mind that free programs such as these, can potentially expose your system to security threats and viruses, and aren't guaranteed to be 100% accurate when it comes to driver downloads.

If you're looking for specific drivers for your hardware though, your best bet would be to go to the respective manufacturer's websites, and download the drivers from there, then at least you can assure yourself that they're not going to be riddled with viruses or malicious code.

Computer is infected with viruses

Blue screens as a result of infection mean the virus has corrupted the operating system. You can fix it by doing an operating system repair with your recovery or operating system disc. Depending on the virus, this may only be a temporary fix. If this turns out to be a temporary fix, then the sure way to fix it is to completely wipe the hard drive, completely reformat using NTFS, and reload the operating system, which I would recommend. If you have any problems during or after the reload, then the virus damaged the hard drive and it will need to be replaced.
