Will only play about half the dvds that we put into it. once in awhile if you turn it off and on it will read the disc.

This sounds like the spindle is not spinning the media you may need a new motor, take the top off to see if when you press play the dvd spins this will confirm this

Continous loading & not playing

I had the same issue with mine. It is one of three problems.

  1. The DVD is dirty. Try cleaning it with window cleaner and a soft rag. Also try other media like CD's to see if the same thing happens. If it still won't play then it needs to be opened up.
  2. I don't suggest opening it up unless you are fairly good with tools. Although its not complicated, care needs to be taken to prevent electric shock. Once the unit 's lid has been removed plug it in carefully and insert a DVD. Watch closely for the DVD spinning. If your DVD does not spin try giving it a gentle spin in any direction. This will usually overcome any torque issues with the motor and allow the DVD to spin and play normally. If it won't spin at all despite gentle manual spinning then the motor for the DVD player has burned out and the unit will need to be replaced.
  3. If the DVD spins up and doesn't play that could mean a faulty laser system or a dirty laser lens. There are cleaning kits you can buy but I prefer the manual method. First UNPLUG the unit. Since you have the power off you can gently soak a cotton swap with 90% isopropyl alcohol or use denatured alcohol (methyl hydrate in Canada) Both are available at most hardware stores. Gently swab the small glass lens with the alcohol. Let it dry and try to watch the DVD again. If it still fails it will need to be replaced.

Dvd wont play just spins

Usual suspects (I have seen each one of these):
1. Home-made DVD defective
a- bad blank
b- bad burn (software settings incorrect)
c- not finalized
d- bad DVD recorder
2. Commercial DVDs - very scratched near center hole where startup data lives
3. Dirty laser lens on DVD player
4. Bad circuitry in DVD player (repairs almost always cost more than a new player)
