Kitchenaid Fridge -- burnt rubber smell

Last night I woke up to the strong smell of burnt rubber emmiting from the bottom vent of my Kitchenaid refrigerator. It is a 6 year old unit (model # KSRG25).

The temperature seemed to be correct on both the freezer and fridge side. I put a temp. probe in the fridge and it registers consistently around 40F (+/-1)

When first discovering the issue the vent fan was blowing out the usual warm air (but smelling burnt). I went to work, returned 10 hours later and the temp. is still fine. The smell is still present. And notably, the fan is constantly on but only blowing cool air. The fan does not shut off. Also, and important to note, every 5 min. or so I hear what sounds like motor (or solenoid) attempting to turn on. It hums for 6 or so seconds then shuts off. Lastly, when I slide the fridge temp control from the current setting from just plus of midpoint to "1" the fan does shuts off. What should I do??

Billtokuma, thank you for the response. I considered that it may be the defrost timer...but the compressor has not turned on for full day now and the temps are finally rising.

What kept the temps stable yesterday withouth the compressor running may have simply been the insulative effects keeping the fridge cold.

I have a tendency to think it is the compressor start relay.

    Your thoughts?

Update: I finally had time to pull the back off to discover a charred compressor starter relay. (Lucky it didn't start a fire!).

I ordered a new relay/capacitor overload kit for the fridge and will update this afternoon when the part is in.

Appears to be a easy swap--and will save $180 replacing this myself vs. KitchenAid authorized repair service.

Final update--I installed a new compressor start relay/capacitor ($59 part). And all is working well again.

Burnt plastic smell coming from bottom of frig

This is a sign of a short and should be looked at immediately. A smell like that is a sign of something burning. I could be the start relay and start capacitor with overload. But I would not sleep with the possibility of a fire. I will look over your model and see if I can find what this could be, Sea Breeze

Take out the battery and run just on external power, see if the smell goes away. If it does, check to see if there is a recall on that battery.

Very Strong Odor When Refrigerator Runs

Without looking at your fridge I would say the strong rubber smell is the heater element has dust on it or the heater contactor is closed and the heaters are staying on. Either way it would be good to get it checked out. I cannot think of anything else that would make a rubber burning smell.

Burning Rubber smell coming from fridge

try taking the bottom panel off and vacuming all the dust on the coils. The dust may be heating up and burning. The coils are usually at the bottom of the fridge. Check to see if the fan is running also.

Fridge smell

check the pipes at the back of the fridge, it could be that one of the pipes has a crack and is leaking gas or oil. If not check the inside of the fride for a brown oily residue. This indicates a leak. Don't turn the fridge back on becasue if the oil and gas mix then the fridge will no longer be usable. If you find either of these get an engineer to fix the problem.

Cooling problem with a ge top freezer refrigerator

I have one that did the same. The coil in the back of the freezer was frosting up because it wasn't defrosting like it was supposed to. I noticed that the thermostat looked damaged so I ordered a new one from sears parts direct which by the way will show a diagram of the model you have. I just installed it last night so I will post how it comes out. This morning the freezer has a burnt smell but I am hoping its from the defrost not working for a while!
