Ultegra Flight Deck shifter problem

Hi, I'm having a problem with my Ultegra shifter, it shifts fine up the cluster, but when I shift into the 3 higher gears the shifter does not seem to ratchet allowing it not to shift. I have lubed it, blown compressed air into it with no luck. Any solution?

Does the shifter move freely but just not click, or is it prevented from moving freely? If it won't move freely when shifting to the highest 3 gears, it may be that the high limit screw on the derailleur need to be adjusted.

Have you checked the limit screws on your derailleur. If the limit screw is screwed in too far the shifter won't rachet.

My guess is the shift cable has slipped, only allowing you the top end of the rachet positions. Drop the shifter to the very lowest cog, make sure the cable is tight, and adjust the tension at the derailleur so that on the first single click it climbs one gear, and isn't noisy there. More tension 9 winding the barel out ) causes it to rise, less, to drop down. It should then hopefully select all the gears, unless the upper stop, the L screw is set too low. This screw stops the derailleur hitting the spokes and going past 1st gear. That shouldn't ever change though.

My shimano ultegra left shifter is super stiff/hard to push in; what is going on?

Try flushing out the shifter(s) with WD-40, use plenty. The next step will be replacing the shift cables and cable housings.
  • Take the bicycle in an area free of cars and obstacles, such as an open parking lot. Concentration is required when learning to use Ultegra shifters or any other type of bicycle shifter.
  • 2 Mount the bicycle and rest both hands on the proper Ultegra hand control. The left-hand control operates the front derailleur. The right-hand control operates the rear derailleur.
  • 3 Start pedaling, smoothly and evenly. While pedaling is crucial to propelling the bicycle forward, it is also necessary when shifting the derailleur. Pedaling forces the chain to rotate. The chain must rotate before it can transfer to another gear.
  • 4 Push the outside right Shimano Ultegra lever in toward the bicycle. The rear derailleur will shift the chain to a smaller rear gear.
  • 5 Push the inside right Shimano Ultegra lever in toward the bicycle. The rear derailleur will shift the chain to a larger rear gear.
Rear Ultegra Derailleur Control
  • 1 Push the outside left Shimano Ultegra lever in toward the bicycle. The front derailleur will shift the chain to larger front gear.
  • 2 Push the inside left Shimano Ultegra lever in toward the bicycle. The front derailleur will shift the chain to a smaller front gear.
  • 3 Use the front and rear Ultregra hand controls interchangeably. For small changes in gearing, using the rear control. For larger changes, choose the front control. A smaller gear causes the bicycle to travel a shorter distance per pedal stroke but also requires less energy to use. A larger gear requires greater effort but in turn causes the bicycle to travel farther per pedal stroke.

all the contacts for the flight deck are right there in the brake handles.. take the flight deck controls loose and give everything a good cleaning and double check your cabling to the deck... You may just have dirty contacts or a broken wire... otherwise...things may be wearing out in the shifters..

I would like to replace the shifter cables on my ultegra flight deck shifters how do i go about this

You will need to purchase new cables obviously, but I would strongly advise that you purchase them as part of a set that includes the outer housing. That way you'll be sure your shifting is smooth and trouble free. You will need to loosen the pinch bolts at both derailleurs and pull the cable loose. Then you can pull them free at the shifter....I'd recommend going to the shimano website or sheldon brown to see illustrations on exactly how to do this. You then replace the cable housings (don't forget to inject some lube into the them) and then rethread the cable. You will also need a cable cutting tool (don't use anything else as the cables will fray) and some cable caps. Tighten the pinch bolt at the derailleurs, adjust the shifting and your done.

Left bar end shifter does not hold on big chain wheel. The shifter turns down during riding.

You may just have too much cable stretch. Try this out: shift to the small chain ring and release the shifter cable at the derailleur. Pull the cable really tight and reattach it.

i hope this helps

Need to remove the cable from the 105 flight deck

This really depends on what cable you need to replace, the brake or the shifter.

For Shifter:
1. Shift the all the way down to the lowest gear using the small inside shift level for both the front or rear.
2.Disconnect the cable from the derailluer, likely a 5mm allen wrench will be needed.
3.Pull housing away from the shifter exposing the cable where it enters the shifter.
4.Compress the brake lever, this will expose a small hole on the inside of the shifter where the cable head is seated. For the right shifter the hole will be on the right, for the left shifter the hole will be on the left.
5. Push the cable in from where the cable entered the shifter. The head of the cable will now be exposed.
6.Pull the cable the rest of the way out of the shifter.
7.Install the new cable.

For Brake:

1. Disconnect the brake cable, likely with a 5 mm allen wrench.
2. Compress the brake lever. Keep it compressed until step 5.
3.Look straight in from the front of the bike, you will see the head of the brake cable.
4.Push the cable out of the shifter from the exposed area of the cable, then pull once you can reach the end of the cable.
5.Install a new cable.

Depending on the reason you have removed the cable, it is advised that you also replace the housing in most cases. For the shift cables this is not a problem, however, for the brake cables you will have to untape the bars to access the housing.

I hope this anwsers your question. Thank you

My LH ultegra flight deck does not shift.

Try disconnecting the cable as you would if you were replacing it. Check the cable for wear (frayed wires in the cable). While you have the cable out try shifting it to see if it now works. Check for an article which may help.

Broken shimano 105 flight deck shifter

You may have broken your derailleur cable. Your cable securing bolt on your front derailleur might have worked loose just enough for the cable to get some slack in it so that your derailleur isn't moving. Try completely loosening the cable bolt at your front derailleur. Pull on the cable and click the control to downshift to the inside crank gear . That should remove all the slack from the cable. Worse case scenario is when you pull on the cable it will completely pull out and it has broken at the shifter. You will have to replace it with a new one. If it isn't broken and you can still shift with the cable make sure your limit screw is properly adjusted for the inside crank ring and then pull all the slack out of the cable with the shifter shifted to that gear. Tighten the bolt that holds the cable in place and try the shifter again. It should now shift normally. If it doesn't you will have to take the bike in to have the shifter repaired. These shifters are not easy to repair unless you have the tools, parts and experience. Hope this helps.
