Saying paper jammed ..but no paper is jammed????

Hi! On the message bar there is " DOCUMENT JAMMED" blinking, but there is no paper loaded in the machine. When a call comes in (I have the same phone number for home phone and fax machine)it rings but there is no sound on the handset. And there is no dial tone either. I've opened the machine and didn't see any paper jammed anywhere. I seemed to recall, not really sure that, at one occasion, while sending a fax, the paper stuck, and I pulled the paper out from the bottom. Could this be the reason or could this move damaged the machine? And is there any solution? Thanks for any advice or help! my mashine is doing the same thing, says jammed but no paper stuck. also handset stop work 2... don't no what to do...HELP....
