Question about Dell Inspiron 6000 Notebook

Dell inspiron 6000 will not will not start

It brings the screen up but just sits there. I got a new battery thinking it was that. I took it to the geek squad and they told me it had a virus and needed to be wiped and that I need the system installation discs. I cannot find them, I have my mcafee installation disc only. There is a folder "my pictures" that I have to have. It cannot be deleted. Four years of my life of people and pets that are no longer with me. Only memories I have. Can you help.

Hi there

this may not be what you want to hear but i belive from what you have said that yom mat be about to learn the hardway about backing up your data

you have a macafee original install disk ?

if you have switch the laptop on and as the dell screen is shown keep tapping the del key this should allow you to go into bios of the latop look for the boot order section and make sure that your first device is your cd rom drive then save and exit put your macafee disk in your cdrom drive and restart the laptop this should now boot from the cd and perform a virus scan let it fix what i can cross your fingers and reboot,

If that did not work i beleive it needs to be seen by a real engineer
your local computer store not chain are normally better ( they should be able to retrieve your pics " i would normally charge a min of £80 to recover your data depending on how much you have without any guarentee (due to possible malicious virus damage) if you have not got the restore disks you will have to purchase a new copy of windows ,

or speak to dell and tellthem that you have come to use the restore disks and they wont boot but a windows xp cd boots fine so hopfully they will mail you a new set for the cost of the postage

Sorry icant be more positive but i have been here many times before and it is a very tricky situation

Regards AL "alstech"

First of all backup the data.

Buy a device such as which will allow you to attach the 2.5 inch drive via USB.
Remove the hard-disk from the laptop.
Attach it using the USB adapter to another computer (with anti-virus) and extract your important files to backup to USB Key, DVD, External Hard-drive etc.

This way you will be backed up and safe.

Contact Dell to get a copy of your installation discs - you could try to repair the install of Windows through the Recovery Console when you have the discs or just re-install.

Ok assuming the geek squad hasn't ruined everything you might be able to save the day. Hopefully they didn't try to re-install windows as that requires you to format the hard drive and your directory will be lost. You can get and adapter that well let you plug your 2.5" laptop hard drive into a ribbon for a 3.5" drive in a regular computer. You need to get one or find someone that has one and let them hook up your hard drive in another computer system and get the files off your old drive before you try to re-install anything or they're gone. Some laptops also came with a hidden partition on them and your re-install program is on that partition. You were suppose to access that somehow I think and it would burn your restore CD's from that partition. Not positive about that. But the important think is to save your files. Beware of geek squads. Beware of Dell tech support. Always remember that REAL COMPUTER REPAIRMEN DON'T LOOSE YOUR DATA AND FILES. They know how to save all that before they start the repair process. Back to re-installing. Look at your Windows sticker on the bottom of your laptop and find out if it's XP home or professional and then ask around. someone will have an installation disc you can use and then you just use your number off your sticker on the bottom.

SOURCE: dell inspiron 6000 will not will not start

One of my boys was using my laptop and spilled tea directly into the unit. It shorted out immediately and my first thought was that all my data and pictures was gone. After I calmed down (and agreed to not force him to live in the streets) decided that it was best to rescue whatever I could rescue. This worked for me, I hope it works for you. TRY THIS:
Remove the hard drive from the computer. Go to Radio Shack or other electronics store and purchase a "Drive Box". A drive box is a small enclosure for your lap top hard drive. Once you place the hard drive in the drive box you will be able to use it just like an external drive. It will attached to your computer via USB.

NOW...go to another computer and plug your new external hard drive into an available USB port.

THEN...try accessing the files on the external hard drive just like you would any other folder on the computer. Since you won't be using the boot and system files information on the external drive you created, you shouldn't have any problems accessing you pictures.

Let me know if you have any problems or need more information. I hope this saves your pictures. I have a few thousand myself.

Once you installed the memory, did you enter into the System BIOS Setup screen? Do this and verify that the system recognizes the newly installed 2GB RAM. This should let the system access the new memory once you boot.

My Dell Inspiron 6000 (which I think I bought in

Have you tried this:
1. After removing the battery
2. Press and hold the power button for at least 10 sec.
3. Put back the battery
4. Turn it on

if this doesnt work, there could be a problem with your operating system. Try accessing safe mode if you can login .TAP F8 continously on the dell logo screen, and it will open advance boot options. (Just select safe mode) If safe mode boots properly try running system restore to restore it back to the previous date where your computer is still booting to windows. Hope this helps

You can also pick up the batteries less expensive than most computer places at batteries plus. And yes it sounds as though it is the batteries charge is getting low, especially if it runs fine when the battery is out and you have it plugged in.
