Speakers

I recently began using a computer that has an envision monitor with the speakers built in. However, the speakers are not working. Today upon further investigation it appears that I may need to have a cable running from the back of the monitor into the computer tower. Can anyone confirm this for me, I realize i sounds stupid and fairly obvious but I would prefer to go buy a new cable than to tinker with it all day.
