Advance line on lawn trimmer

My line trimmer is supposed to advance the line when the spool is tapped on the ground. It won't advance and I have to stop and feed more string by hand. This is not a cartridge and the line must be replaced manually when exhausted. I purchased the line from my dealer so I'm pretty certain it's the correct diameter.

Thank you, but it appears I'm installing everything correctly and the assembly is clean. The problem is that the line won't advance automatically when the spool assembly is tapped on the ground. Do you have any ideas what could be causing this issue?

SOURCE: 18v cordless string trimmer will not stop feeding line

Some of the trimmers recommend a certain size line, if you have one of these that let line out as needed, the speed at which the trimmer cuts will let out line as needed. If you have too small of line the drag for the friction let-out you will spoll all the line out. Make sure the line is the right size, They come in alot of sizes, anywhere from .060" to .125" line thickness so make sure you have the right size line!

SOURCE: adding trimmer line to spool on husqvarna trimmer-two strings

Cut two separate pieces of string, about 7 ft. each.

Stick the end of the line in the hole on the inside of spool.

Wind clockwise onto spool, putting the line that is closest to the ground on first.

Once you have winded this piece on, lock the last 4 inches of line through the slits on spool.

Repeat process for second piece of line, locking the last 4 inches in slot opposite the other locked in piece.

Put the spool on the trimmer, feeding the end of lines through either hole on trimmer.

Before you push the spool all the way on, pull the strings out of the locked position. Put cap on and GO CRAZY!

SOURCE: Need info on putting line on troy bilt 4-cycle

Hold orange spool containing string while twisting the black plastic cap in the center, counterclockwise. This retaining cap is loosely spring loaded, so watch for the spring falling out. Once this locking cap is removed, the spool pulls right off.

Is the string spool seated on the rachet correctly? If so and all is well, it is worth noting that these trimmers auto feed fuunction is problematic at best, requiring manually unwinding some line every few minutes as the unit gets older.

How do you advance the line on the trimmer

To advance the line on a trimmer just push down in the center of the spool head then pull on both lines at the same time and it should release and inch or so of line. If it has a spring on the inside of the head then just tap it in the center of the head on a hard corner surface while its running and it will release more line out. That is what ya call a bump feeder as such.

I can't take off the head to replace the string on a TB7055 weed eater. How do I do this?

Hello, W/D here.
It should pull straight off. It may take a bit of force, and tapping on the bulbous head of the spool (the part that you bump on the ground to advance the line) will help to free it up.
Here's a link to how the spool works, and how to re-wind it:

How do you advance the string

These little electric machines have an automatic line feeding system. Do not bump the trimmer head on the ground attempting to make line advance. If the line advance is not functioning like it should, then the string head should be removed and the spool inspected for snags and tangles.

Weed eater line won't advance.

I know it may sound stupid but on the spool their should be arrows that direct you which way to wind the line if you just added line. Some think one goes one way and the other goes the opposite but they both go around the spool in the same way and do not go in the knotches at the top just out the holes. Make sure the spring did not fall out of spool if their is one in that model and while it is running just tap the bottom of the spool on the ground. If that does not work more than likely when you pushed the line back up into the shaft to screw on the knob the line is pinched between the two holding slots. Turn the trimmer upside down (while off) and push knob in and pull line on both sides to advance line. If line does not come out your line is wound wrong or twisted inside spool and must be untangled and reattached. Both lines run the same direction on spool!

Feed the string

Both lines run in same direction on spool. Make sure it is not pinched or fed through any of the arms in the spool just coming out one on each side of the hole. Tap bottom on ground while trimmer is running to feed line. Each time you tap it line comes out approx 2 inch at a time Common mistake is when new line is added it gets put on in opposite directions. Both do they same direction-arrows on spool tell the way.

Rethreading a garden strimmer

Hi Deborah,
You need to start from the beginning of the trimmer string. Remove the entire spool. Insert the start of the line through and wedge it into the little groove to keep it from coming loose. Now wind the line tightly and neatly in the direction shown on the spool. (it should provide an arrow stating to "wind this way". As you near the end of the line, keep it snug and push the end through the hole where it leads out to the cutting zone. As you re-insert the spool into the housing, make sure it stays tightly wound as you lock it into place. This should help. Usually when your string is too short, you tap the **** of the spool on the ground to advance the line. It should feed a bit at a time, and when you hear it getting cut off, you should stop advancing the line.
Hope this helps.

How do you add trimmer line to Troy Bilt TB539E Weed Eater?

This model trimmer uses .095" diameter line, your local home improvement store will carry replacement line and it will also carry a replacement spool with the line already spooled on it.

This trimmer is a "bump advance" trimmer meaning you bump the head on the ground while it is spinning to advance line out.

What to do to replace the line is place the trimmer on a stable flat surface (like a workbench), raise up the head if the trimmer and unscrew the cap and CAREFULLY remove the spool...you do not want to lose the spring! Take a look at the spool, it will show the direction to spool the line, spool the line then replace the spool by first putting the spring back on the shaft, then put the end of the line through the hole(s) on the side of the outer head, press the spool in place and screw the cap back on.

Of course you can eliminate about 90% of the headaches by buying a pre-spooled head at your local home improvement store...then you follow the directions above and can skip the spooling part. Cheers!

Reloaded string empties and shreds continuously in seconds

It sounds like you may need to replace the head. It is designed to advance and stop, but your's isn't stopping. Try this: Clean the inside of the head and connection to the machine well. Put some graphite inside the spool and where it connects to the machine; be generous with the graphite. Put the head back on with some line properly wound onto the spoo (note arrows on back of spool). With the machine off tap the head on the ground enough to disperse the graphite thoroughly in the head. Now, push the head as though to advance the line, and pull on the line. If it advances a little and stops, it is working. Do this several times to be sure. If you can get it working like this, you're good to go. If not, replace the spool. Even with the new spool, occasionally put some graphite in it to keep the line advance smooth!

Best regards, --W/D--.....Please feel free to rate this solution. Thanx!
