Question about Craftsman 3 gal. Air Compressor, 1.5 hp, Horizontal k

1 Answer

My air compressor starts, amokes, and turns off.

I turn on my air Compressor and it works fine, but it smokes a lot from the muffler, or it looks like a muffler and it smokes like as if it was burning. And then, after a while of working it turns off by itself. What can I do to fix this?

Compressor smoke coming out muffler and smell

Hi Pamela:
Smoke from the muffler will be from unburned fuel (blackish) or from oil (blue).
A compressor is a stationary engine so would typically be a 4 cycle engine. It would have an oil dipstick and burn straight gas.
I'd be checking the fuel.
- If it is using oil then that would be where the smoke is coming from. If you check the spark plug it will probably be black and fouled with the oil residue.
That would indicate that the unit has seen a lot of use and needs overhaul or replacement. Some of the contractors in this area plan on replacing their gas engine compressors every 2 years. They tend to run long hours, and get tired.
Sort of like me.
All for now.

Screaming noise from ac no cold air

It sounds to me that your belt or tensioner is worn, if the noise goes away when the ac is off then it is just the belt slipping, it takes a lot of power to run the compressor and if the belt is worn it most likely slipping on the pully when you engage the clutch.

2004 Chrysler Voyager, had an acrid burning smell and a lot of smoke when heater is turned on, also a rattling/squealing noise, all stops when heater turned off?

you more than likely have a sciezed air con compressor. most modern cars have climate control which uses air con even when demisting and when engaged the electric clutch tries to engage but the pump itself will not turn, clutch will get red hot and burn your belts

We have a 2004 XAS 136 rotary screw compressor. The problem started suddenly. Engine starts and runs fine. On activating compressor, (blue button) there is a bit of exhaust smoke and engine seems overload....

First check oil level in both the engine AND the compressor if it has an oil sump.
It ounds like the piston rings or cylinders are scored causing the engine to have no power under load and to burn oil, and the compressor may also be seized.

if there is the correct amount of oil in the engine then consider an oil change and add some
Ametech Engine Restorer Oil Additive

to both engine oil and the compressor oil (providing it also uses ordinary engine oil too)

Smokes and smells like gas at muffler

That has to be gas that is not being burned! No idea why blowing a fuse with the air compressor rashed your car like that - must be coincidental or collateral damage.

Check the compressor tank for any water, the symptoms are just what you would expect if there is excessive moisture in the tank.

We just replace the radiator, fan, belts, water pump and pulley in my ford f250. It runs fine w/o a/c. When I turn the a/c on it makes alot of noise and smoke comes out of the compressor unit under the...

The smoke is probably coming from the Serpentine belt. Flip the belt and see if it is now starting to be SHINY. The belt is going faster than the Compressor has the ability to turn. More than likely, the Compressor is partially seized and needs to be replaced.

Compressor runs for a bit and builds about 30 psi

Remove the belt and try and turn the pump by hand if it turns free then you have a bad motor and it will need to be replaced

My 5 hp, 25 Gal. Craftsman air compressor is blowing a lot of air out of the muffler and little into the tank. I dismantled, cleaned and oiled the head and it seems a little better but still won't pump up...

It sounds like your intake valve is worn or defective. Take the head apart again and look to see if the valve is sealing properly. If you post a comment with your model number I can look up the specific parts at sears parts.

If your compressor is functioning properly, air should not come out of the intake muffler (filter)

The Air Compressor Smokes and Then turns off after a while.

sounds like the piston rings are blowing by allowing oil to get into the compression cylinder.
You should chuck it and go buy a new compressor as this one is more to fix than to replace.
