Take off the plate around the shift lever between your legs and take a look at the belts. Most likely they will be in poor condition. You can even leave the trans in neutral, start the engine and move the speed selector through the gears and observe the belts in action. They do the same in neutral as in gear when you let out the clutch with the engine running. You should be able to see what the problem is, It will either be one or both of the belts or possibly the needle bearings in the vari-speed pulley itself,

I HAVE A 1994 MTD 18HP BRIGGS WITH MOD #144Q828H118, WHILE I WAS MOWING THE CLUTCH WOULD NOT RELEASE AND THE GEAR SHIFT WILL NOT GO INTO THE LOWER GEARS. WHAT HAPPENED?

The tractor has a variable speed pulley for the 1-6 gears. You will want to check the top pulley on the shaft that is in the center of your tractor between the engine and transaxle. you may have broke the spring or adjuster.

Sounds like it's jumping out of gear, a common fault with these. They are way to heavy for the transmision and really should only be used on flat ground. I bet the fuel tank split around on of the mounting bolts?

Did you replace BOTH of the ground drive belts?
The deck belt has absolutely nothing to do with the pulling power of the tractor.
The 600 series MTDs have a single speed transaxle with a variable speed selector to give you the different speed ranges and requires 2 belts, one from the engine (the top half of the pulley) to the variable speed mechanism and one from the variable speed to the transaxle if one or both of the belts is worn, it will cause a loss of power to the ground

MTD Lawn Tractor problem

The front belt should be a 954-0280A, rear 954-0370. When you go to higher gears, the front belt should be getting tighter as the vari-speed pulley is moving further back. Remove the shift plate, put the transmission in neutral. Start the engine, put speed selector in highest gear and slowly let out on the clutch. You should be able to see what the problem is. It will do everything the same as if were in gear, except move. Make sure you have the correct belts.

Slow Mow

Try fixing this problem by making sure the belt is installed properly.. Whenever you install a drive belt it needs to be "seated". Make sure the belt is on correctly and the first time you try it out to see if the mower will move, start out in the highest gear. Hang on as it may ****, but this is the proper way to replace and seat a drive belt.
