Question about Washing Machines

Agitator only works occasionally and with the assistance of some pressure

My whirlpool washer, model # LSQ9211KQ1, functions properly, with the exception of the agitator. It agitates intermittantly, and seems to work a little bit better when I put some pressure on it in one direction or another? Anybody with any ideas??? I would appreciate any help I can get. Chris

Good afternoon - I have a Whirlpool model LSR7233EQ0 washer. The washer works fine in regards to draining, filling, lower agitator works...however, the top agitator does not engage and almost sounds like...

Whirlpool uses a split agitator design. The upper portion is called the auger, while the bottom is called the agitator. Between these components is a agitator cam assembly. This problem is commonly caused by worn agitator dogs or the agitator cam assembly. The following link explains what the dogs are and how to replace them:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3608577-replacing_agitator_dogs

The part number is included in the link provided. You can purchase replacements at pcappliancerepair.com for about $5. For a little more you can purchase the entire cam replacement kit, which includes the cam, the thrust bearing, and the dogs. For the model number you have listed, the part number for the kit is 285811 and sells for about $11.

NOTE: You can refer to the excellent exploded view parts diagrams the web site has to offer for assistance. Whirlpool also recommends the application of a little grease on the thrust washer. The part number for their recommended grease is AP3098553.

If you have any questions about this repair, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

NOTE: DO NOT overtighten the agitator bolt. This can cause damage to the plastic, or restrict the agitator movement. Tighten until snug only.

Agitator not working

Hi, This agitator is a 2 piece agitator. Can you see if the lower half on the agitator is working properly? If the lower part is working and the top is not, you will need to change the agitator dogs. If neither half are working, you might be having transmission issues.
To change the dog kit, re,ove the top cap on the agitator and locate a 7/16" bolt. Remove the bolt and the agitator will lift out. Pull the agitator apart and the dogs are 4 small plastic pieces inside the top half of the agitator.
Please let me know if this helps you or if I can assist you further.

Thanks
Vic

Whirlpool Washer LLT714-4000 is making a grinding noise when agitating. Otherwise works fine.

Hi, I am sorry but that model # is not coming up. I wanted to look this up and see if it is the 2 piece agitator model. If it is, check and see if the lower half of the agitator is working.
You can also grab the top of the agitator (while the washer is turned off) and see if it spin in both directions. If it spins both ways, you will need to change the dog kit inside the agitator.
Please let me know if this helps you aor if I can assist you further.

Neptune washer will not go past the first wash cycle

All functions operate normally except the machine will not agitate.

The agitator is driven by a couple of different methods. The first is the agitator is splined and slips onto the matching splines of the agitator shaft from the transmission. The second is the use of a bell coupling which is splined to the agitator shaft as well and the agitator snaps onto the coupling. If the agitator does not agitate, first remove the agitator and watch the agitator shaft to see if it is working properly. This will require a small load setting of water and the machine set to run. If the agitator shaft is working properly, it is either the splines on the agitator or the bell coupling that is defective. If the agitator shaft does not work properly, the problem is in the transmission.

Agitator not working properly

This is a fairly simple process. Just follow these steps:

1. Remove dispenser cap by pulling off.
2. Under the dispenser cap is another plastic cap with a washer. Pull this out to expose the agitator bolt underneath.
3. Using a socket and rachet (easiest method) remove agitator bolt and remove entire agitator by pulling from the bottom flanges and lifting straight up.

If you go to searspartsdirect.com and type in your model number, there's an excellent drawing of your agitator and components under the "Agitator, Basket and Tub" heading. Use this as a reference for reinstalling any parts.

I hope this helps you. If you still require assistance, please let me know.

Wobbly agitator

If you remove the center cap from the agitator there should be either a bolt or a square recessed socket that you can attempt to tighten. The bolt is either 7/16" or 1/2". The recessed socket can be tightened using a 3/8" to 1/2" socket adapter.

Make sure the agitator is seated properly on the center post. You can accomplish this by finding the mounting bolt and loosening it enough to free the agitator on the post and push down evenly on the bottom flanges at the base of the agitator where it meets to bottom of the tub.

Try this and let me know if it helps. Post back if you need further assistance.

Agitator not working

There are several things that can cause your machine to fail to agitate. First of all, you need to ask yourself a few of these questions:

1. Does the washer fill normally, initiate agitation cycle and just the agitator is not moving? If so, the transmission and motor coupling are likely good and the agitator has probably worn out the dogs that cause it to grip properly. The agitator dogs will need to be replaced and you shouldn't need a new agitator. (rough estimate = $5.00 to $6.00).

2. Does the washer fill normally, but stops when the agitation cycle is to begin? If so, I would suspect a faulty lid switch. The lid switch will allow the washer to fill, but will not advance the timer beyond that point on some models. (rough estimate = $35.00).

3. Does the washer fill normally and makes a loud grinding noise when the agitation cycle begins? If so, I would suspect your motor coupling is bad and needs replaced. (rough estimate = $18.00 to $20.00).

4. Does the washer fail to fill at all? If so, I would suspect a bad fill valve, pressure switch remaining shut off and/or timer. (rough estimate for fill valve = $35.00, timer = abt $100.00).

These questions are not all inclusive, but these are some of the more common problems I have encountered. If you can provide me with a little more symptom elaboration, I can lead you in the right direction and get a part number and a better price for you. I will need your EXACT model number (located somewhere along the lid opening. Post back with your comments if you need my assistance. A good majority of the problems associated with Whirlpool top loaders can be easily repaired by the average consumer without assitance from a repairman. I hope this information is helpful to you.

I would make sure that the washer is properly leveled, and ensure that all sensors that check if the door is closed are working properly.
